CONDITION Backguard and control panel discoloration/melting. CAUSE The discoloration is caused by excessive heat vented from the oven to the top surface of the range. The vents are located below the control panel at the front of the lower backguard and control panel. CORRECTION If you should encounter complaints concerning the discoloration/melting of the backguard and control panel, a heat shield is now available to correct this condition. Order appropriate heat shield kit and control panel for corresponding model listed above. For the gray heat shield order part number 12001256 and for the black shield order part number 12001257. NOTE: The heat shield can be ordered separately if needed. The part number is 74002198 for gray, and part number 74002199 for black. Maytag Jenn-Air

NOTE: Before installing heat shield, replace the backguard control panel. (Due to different clock configurations, some kits may contain more than one control panel.)

Disconnect electrical supply and gas supply before servicing the appliance. Remove (3) screws that secure sight shield to backguard assembly (see illustration next page). Insert right end of heat shield through the sight opening between the backguard assembly and the range main back. Position the heat shield as far right as possible and pivot left end of heat shield into position (as illustrated next page). Align heat shield mounting holes with existing screw holes for sight shield, position sight shield back into place and attach shield to backguard assembly, using existing screws. Reconnect gas supply, and check for gas leaks. Reconnect electrical supply and check range for proper operation. Instruction Sheet 16007570 Reissued 11/95 TS696 Continued...
