Abstract:
Mechanics is the study of the behaviour of physical bodies subjected to forces or motion. It attempts to bring understanding to the inner workings of materials in terms of mathematics and physics. It provides scientific support to the artistic side of civil engineering activities. Mechanics plays a major role in all civil engineering endeavours ranging from design of innovative materials and structures to solutions that attempt to protect the environment from adverse effects created by human activities and by natural phenomena. The Lecture provides a brief historical overview of mechanics and how it has transformed civil engineering and in particular how mechanics e amined via computers has resulted in innovative approaches to solving comple problems in civil engineering.
