Robert Gordon Menzies was Australias longest serving Prime Minister. He held the office twice, from 1939 to 1941 and from 19 49 to 1966. Altogether he was Prime Minister for over 18 years still the record term for an Australian Prime Minister.

ELECTIONS
Robert Menzies won the seat of Kooyong, covering the affluent inner-eastern suburbs of Melbourne, in 1934. He held the seat for 32 years, contesting another 11 federal elections, until his retirement from parliament on 26 January 1966.

AFTER THE OFFICE


Robert Menzies retired as Prime Minister on 20 January 1966. At 71 years of age, he planned to withdraw from politics and devote his time to writing, reading and travel.

PATTIE MENZIES
Pattie Menzies served the longest term as prime ministerial wife, from 1939 to 1941 and from 1949 to 1966. She was a widely respected public figure, and was made Dame Grand Cross of the British Empire in 1954.

WHEN HE DIED
Sir Robert died on may 15 1978 and he died peacefully
