Specialized Schools: Who are the Stakeholders?

Stakeholder: A person, group, or organization with an interest in or concern

about something who can be either positively or negatively affected by the results of that thing.

Imagine this scenario:

There is a person experiencing homelessness who you often see sleeping on the corner of your street. He seems hungry, and you decide to hold a canned food dri e to help him. !ou collect "# cans of food from your $rew and are excited to deli er them to the man. %ut when you try to gi e the cans of food to the man, he says &No, than' you.( It turns out that he eats at a soup 'itchen e ery day and he isn)t actually hungry. %esides * he doesn)t e en ha e a can opener or a microwa e to warm up the food inside the cans. He tells you that what he really needs is a warm coat, +ecause winter is coming and he doesn)t want to free,e. Now you feel +ad, you ha e "# cans of food you don)t 'now what to do with, you wasted a +unch of your time and resources, and the homeless man is still cold-

Thin' .+out:
How could you ha e pre ented this situation/ How could you ha e made sure that you were doing something that would actually +enefit this man/

The Ta'eaway: 0hen addressing a pressing issue, it is always important to identify the
sta'eholders +efore deciding on a way forward. 1ta'eholders are often the most 'nowledgea+le people a+out an issue, and it)s important to find out what they 'now and what they want +efore trying to ma'e a plan. 0hen you)re trying to help, you wouldn)t want to accidentally hurt +y ma'ing a plan that actually lea es the sta'eholders worse off than they were +efore-

.lways find out what sta'eholders know and what they want-
