STANDARD 2. BUILDING FAMILY AND COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIPS Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs understand that successful early childhood education depends upon partnerships with childrens families and communities. They know about, understand, and value the importance and complex characteristics of childrens families and communities. They use this understanding to create respectful, reciprocal relationships that support and empower families, and to involve all families in their childrens development and learning. (NAEYC, 2011) Brief Description of Evidence: I work in a small group to create a family. In the project family scenario, I was a 13-year old boy that was dealing with the loss of his mother. Throughout the project different situations would arise within the family. At many points throughout the project the family had to rely on the community to help them out during the time of need. This project brought together family and community and showed how they can work together. Analysis of What I Learned: Throughout the duration of this project we as a family had to work together to get through each and every situation that we were faced. During this project we had to rely heavily on the community and what they offered families such as; classes, groups, online support and transportation if is needed to and from appointments. This project showed me that communities can offer resources, support and gives families a piece of mind. How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard: This project is just one of several that works with all families within the community. This project also shows the value that a community could have on a family. The more the community has to offer sets forth an empowering response from the families that want to get involved with the community outreach programs.
