Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact Rationale/Reflection

NAEYC Standard: STANDARD TWO. BUILDING FAMILY AND COMMUNITY Relationships Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs understand that successful early childhood education depends upon partnerships with childrens families and communities. They know about, understand, and value the importance and complex characteristics of childrens families and communities. They use this understanding to create respectful, reciprocal relationships that support and empower families, and to involve all families in their childrens development and learning (NAEYC, 2011). Brief Description of Artifact: My artifact is my Family Scenarios Project from my ECED 204 Families in Transition class. It includes a description of a familys microsystem, mesosystems, exosystem, macrosystem, and chronosystem; showing how the family is affected by their family make up and their community influences and involvements. Analysis of What I Learned: I learned how to communicate with families. The more you learn about a family the more you can be of a resource and help them by proving them with information best suitable for their family make up and values. I learned the more you openly communicate with a family the more you will be able to understand them and get to know them. Having conversations and spending time with families shows them you value their partnership in their childs learning. It also gains their trust so they will feel more comfortable to talk about situations and ask any questions they may have. How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard: This artifact demonstrates my competency because it shows I can respectfully communicate with families and understand their beliefs and values to assist them so their children can be developing and learning in ways the family approves of. My communication skills I have further developed throughout the family scenarios project allows me to get families more involved and understand options and resources in the community that are available to them. It demonstrates I am able to support children and families in their everyday lives by having a relationship with them and helping them to better understand how children develop and learn. Children and their families can rely on me to assist them in making progress in their familys development area most important to them.
