Summary: Who keeps the community clean? Sanitation Workers! Sanitation workers follow a different route everyday collecting trash, that goes into a big landfill or that is burned daily. Sanitation workers wear very thick gloves that protect them from dirt, sharp objects, and germs while doing their job to keep parks and other public places clean. A sanitation workers job is never done; they even sometimes plow the snow in the winter in addition to collecting trash!

Title: What does a Police Officer Do? Author: Felicia Lowenstein Publisher: Enslow Publishing 2005 Berkeley Heights, NJ United States Summary: Police officers are here to protect you and me! Police officers can be both men and women and ride around in squad cars that have sirens, flashing lights, and a radio or they can ride on horses or even bicycles! Police officers not only dress up in a neat uniform but they can also dress up in plain clothes! Remember police officers work day and night so if you need them call them at 9-1-1!

Title: Firefighters A to Z Author: Chris L. Demarest Publisher: Childrens Publishing Division 2005 NY, NY United States Summary: This book basically gives the firefighters job description or what their uniform consists of from A to Z. Example: A is for ALARM that rings loud and clear. M is for MASK into which clean air flows O is for opening places fire hides. I feel as though this is a great book for those who are just learning their ABCs, it is a great way to practice the alphabet and learn about firemen.

Title: Newspaper Carriers Author: Sandra J. Christian Publisher: Bridgestone Books 2001 Mankato, MN United States Summary: Newspaper carriers deliver newspapers so people can read the news. Though we do not really see as many people delivering newspapers on a specific route there are some still in various communities. This book describes what exactly a news carrier does, what they wear, etc. Loved the glossary that is located in the back of the book.

Title: Construction Zone Author: Cheryl Willis Hudson Publisher: Candlewick Press 2006 Cambridge, MA United States Summary: What do you construction Zone? This book opens up with that question and it basically discuss everything that you may see when riding through a construction zone. This is a great book because it goes into detail in regards to the job as a construction worker and how construction workers build various things based off of the architects models and drawings, and it even has a glossary in the back of the books for works like architect and bull dozers!

Title: Security Guards Author: Mary Firestone Publisher: Bridgestone 2003 Mankato, MN United States Summary: This book basically describes the job of a security officer. This book describes the various jobs that some security guards may have such as patrolling events, calling the police if they see a crime, etc. This book also describes how security guards work in different places such as the airport, hotels, and sporting events.

Title: Supermarket Author: Kathleen Krull Publisher: Holiday House Inc. 2001 NY,NY United States Summary: This book is about various types of supermarkets and the workers you find inside of them. The author explains how supermarkets work and how the workers have to organize, display, and keep track of all the items that they sell.

Title: Everybody Works Author: Shelley Rotner Publisher: The Millbrook Press 2003 Brookfield, CT Summary: This book has a few sentences on each page and tons of pictures of their statement. Example, Work is caring and protecting then they have pictures of firefighters, police officers, and doctors. Work is delivering and selling here they have pictures of mail carriers and cashiers from the local supermarket. This was a very short book with very little words and gave you a great opportunity to discuss community helpers that some student may see in their neighborhood.

Title: What Can We Play Today? Author: Jane Belk Moncure Publisher: The Childrens World 1988 Mankato, MN Summary: I have been using this book for a lot of the activities that I have been doing with the children. I like how it has the open ended question of Guess what you will be today? It is about children who play dress up and become various community helpers throughout the story. After I read the story I then ask the children: Guess what you will be today? and then begin my activity after they have guessed right!

Title: Community Helpers from A to Z Author: Bobbie Kalman Publisher: Crabtree Publishing Company 1998 NY, NY United States Summary: This is a great alphabet book for community helper theme! It discusses how various helpers throughout the community make it clean and safe! This book names every helper from police officer to sanitation worker.

Title: Mail Carriers Author: Dee Ready Publisher: Bridgestone Books 1998 Mankato, MN Summary: This book describes what it takes to be a mail carrier. This book discusses how mail carriers have various routes and carries a pouch that holds their mail while walking their route. Children were engaged with the book some even saying they carry their mail in a book bag just like my big brother!

Title: Truck drivers Author: Karen Bush Publisher: Bridgestone Books 2001 Mankato, MN United States Summary: Discusses how most truck drivers spent most of their time on the highways and roads. Truck drivers transport goods to people and business and often times unload the cargo. This book describes the type of work that truck drivers do and the people who help them.

Title: School Crossing Guard Author: Terri DeGezelle Publisher: Bridgestone Books 2002 Mankato, MN United States Summary: This book explains how crossing guards help children walk to and from school safely. They learn that crossing guards stop cars at intersections for their safety and how they stand near sidewalks and crosswalks with either a stop sign or flag.

Title: Community Helpers Past, Present, and Future Author: Lisa Bozzo Publisher: Enslow Publishing 2011 Berkeley Heights, NJ United States Summary: This book discusses the growth of various community helpers such as firefighter, mail carriers, and police officers. This is a cool book to see how times have changed! Great for not only a community helper theme but also history.

Title: Living In a City Author: Lisa Trumbauer Publisher: Capstone Press 2005 Mankato, MN Summary: This book is great for community helpers! It gives an explanation of the city and how some workers have jobs at school, outside, and how some people drive citizens around on the school bus, taxis, or regular bus. Great way to get children to think about the people who they see in their community every day!

Title: Emergency Medical Author: Heather Adamson Publisher: Capstone Publisher 2004 Mankato, MN Summary: Defines EMT and states how they check equipment on the ambulance, making sure everything is ready to use. Also discusses how EMTs works on teams to lift patients and how their pants pockets may hold supplies.
