Concept of homeostasis

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Explain the concept of homeostasis and describe the homeostatic control system

Learning outcomes: Explain the concept of homeostasis and describe the homeostatic control system

Definition:
The process of maintaining biologically stable conditions inside a living organisms, through physiological processes

Learning outcomes: Explain the concept of homeostasis and describe the homeostatic control system

Physiological control:

Body can regulate its internal environment through feedback mechanisms

The optimal level in a homeostatic control is known as the reference point or set point

Learning outcomes: Explain the concept of homeostasis and describe the homeostatic control system

3 basic components of the homeostatic control

Receptor

Control centre

Effector

Learning outcomes: Explain the concept of homeostasis and describe the homeostatic control system

Input

Receptor

Control centre (Where required condition is set)

Effector

Response

Feedback (eg. condition restored to reference point)

Changed condition

Learning outcomes: Explain the concept of homeostasis and describe the homeostatic control system

CONTROL CENTER

Learning outcomes: Explain the concept of homeostasis and describe the homeostatic control system

CONTROL CENTER

1. Receptor / sensor - detect any changes from the reference point - sends signals to a control center / integration centre

Learning outcomes: Explain the concept of homeostasis and describe the homeostatic control system

CONTROL CENTER

2. Control centre / Integration centre - receives information from receptors - initiates the appropriate response to restore conditions to the reference point

Learning outcomes: Explain the concept of homeostasis and describe the homeostatic control system

CONTROL CENTER

3. Effector - receives output from the control centre and produces a response
