Advancement Via Individual Determination

Decades of College Dreams Lakenheath Middle School October Newsletter

Whew! What a busy first quarter we just had! All of our AVID students have been working diligently to achieve good grades. We are all so proud of their hard work and determination to be successful! With that said, we hope that the second quarter goes just as well.

Students usually find the second quarter much more challenging so they will need additional support and encouragement from all of us. Parents, please continue to check your students agenda as well as gradespeed. Additionally, you can support them by ensuring that you are signing their Weekly Progress Report each week for AVID. They are also learning how to retain information in their long term memory by taking Cornell Notes! So, all AVID students should be using their Cornell Notes as a study tool.

Lastly, I would like to thank all the parents who have volunteered to help us out with the events we have sponsored this month. Because of your help we are able to provide our AVID students with experiences that go beyond the walls of our classrooms. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us at any time. Working together, Stacey Hull-Walsh & Angela Clouse

We love our reading buddies!

Every year in AVID the 7th and 8th grade classes adopt a class from Feltwell Elementary. Once a month the 7th and 8th grade students go to the elementary school to read to their buddies. Each student is paired with a buddy and acts as a mentor to the younger students. Thank you to Ms. Fox-Blake, Ms. Page, Ms. Wotring, & Ms. Midthun for allowing us to come and read to your students!

What is your favorite book or movie character and how do they influence you to be a better student?

Block 1 Sara Luebkert

My favorite character is Katniss from The Hunger Games. She motivates me, because she is a hard worker and she isnt afraid of anything.

Block 2- Ellie Powell

My favorite character is Hermione Granger, and anyone who knows her knows how she influences a student! Hermione is a great student herself in both the Harry Potter books and movies. Seeing the levels of knowledge Hermione exceeds makes me want to work harder to get valedictorian, just like she did!

Block 3 Maddy Powell My favorite book character is Skeeter Phelan from The Help. She influences me to work harder in school, because she is determined to succeed in everything she does. Her determination encourages me to work my hardest.

Block 4Taylor Formantes

My favorite character from a book is Niki from Dork Diaries and she influences me to be a better student, because she studies hard and tries her best.

Block 5 Abi Ellis

My favorite book character is Sabrina Grimm from the book series The Sisters Grimm, and she always reminds me that I can be strong and smart.

Block 7 Maisie Smith

I have a lot of favorite characters. If I had to choose just one it would be Ironman. He helps me be a better student by facing the bullies (the evil dude). Also, he is a genius. This inspires me to be a kind helpful and hardworking student.

Save the Date!

We are proud to host our very first AVID Teambuilding day to be held at LMS on Wednesday, November 27, 2013. Highline Adventure will be hosting our field day and they will be bringing: a rock climbing wall, spider mountain obstacle, and two sets of team building activities. Students must come dressed for English weather in November. Students do not need to bring a lunch, because we will be providing a cookout for them. We still need donations for hot dogs, hot dog buns, hamburgers and hamburger buns. Please let Mrs. Hull-Walsh or Mrs. Clouse know if you would like to chaperone or help out.

We would love your help on our AVID Site Team!
