CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):

Name: Muhita Ahmad Grade Level: 9-12

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSF.IF.A.1 Understand that a function from one set (called the domain) to another set (called the range) assigns to each element of the domain exactly one element of the range. If f is a function and x is an element of its domain, then f(x) denotes the output of f corresponding to the input x. The graph of f is the graph of the equation y = f(x). CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSF.IF.A.2 Use function notation, evaluate functions for inputs in their domains, and interpret statements that use function notation in terms of a context. 16.0 Students understand the concepts of a relation and a function, determine whether a given relation defines a function, and give pertinent information about given relations and functions. 17.0 Students determine the domain of independent variables and the range of dependent variables defined by a graph, a set of ordered pairs, or a symbolic expression. 18.0 Students determine whether a relation defined by a graph, a set of ordered pairs, or a symbolic expression is a function and justify the conclusion.
Big Ideas:

The concept of function applies to a wide range of situations since they it is so broad and flexible. Their graphs are useful because they help us get a visual representation of situations. In addition, graphs also help us understand data quickly when you want to make a comparison, show a relationship, or highlight a trend.
Unit Goals and Objectives:

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Understand the concept of function and use function notation. Represent relations and functions. Graph and evaluate linear, polynomial, rational, root, and absolute value functions. Determine whether a relation is a function or not. Understand and identify domain and range. Create examples of functions.

Unit Summary:

The most important way to visualize a function is through its graph. In this unit, we are going to investigate the concept of graphing functions in more detail. We will explore different kinds of functions such as linear, absolute value, quadratics, rational, and power functions through different class activities and lessons.
Assessment Plan: Entry-Level: Formative: Summative:

Students will fill out the K & W portion of the KWL chart. This will show their existing knowledge on the unit material.

Students will need to study terms on flashcards and know the 6 basic graphs and will be quizzed on that. They will also need to complete a worksheet and finish the L portion of the KWL Chart. The formative assessments will help identify students strengths and weaknesses.
Instructional Strategies: Communication Collection Collaboration Presentation Organization Interaction
Lesson Activities:

A test will be given at the end of the unit and students will also do a mini project on creating a poster with information on functions and their graphs. This will assess the overall understanding of the material and show if students have grasped all the concepts.

Lesson 1 Student Learning Objective: Acceptable Evidence:

Understand concept of function, its special rules, and use of function notation. Understand and identify domain and range. Determine whether a give relation is a function or not.
Lesson 2 Student Learning Objective:

Students will complete the guided notes that go along with the lecture presentation and turn it into me for a homework grade.

Students will view a lecture and answer the guided notes questions.

Acceptable Evidence:

Represent relations and functions. Graph and evaluate functions.

Students will complete the WebQuest and turn it in to be graded as a homework assignment.

Instructional Strategies: Communication Collection Collaboration Presentation Organization Interaction Instructional Strategies: Communication Collection Collaboration Presentation Organization Interaction

Lesson Activities:

Students will complete a WebQuest where they will explore the internet links and collect information necessary to complete the WebQuest worksheet.

Lesson 3 Student Learning Objective: Acceptable Evidence:

Lesson Activities:

Represent functions. Identify domain and range. Create examples of functions.

Students will complete the graphic organizer along with the checklist and turn it in before test day.

Students will create a concept map on functions. The concept map must include graphs of functions, different ways to represent them, their characteristics/descriptions and students must include their own example of each function. They can work independently or in small groups of 2-3.
