te Mid. The students have already learned about the geography of Latin America and some culture, including food and music. Theyve also learned about the causes and some of the effects of poverty in Latin America and what the poverty looks like. Desired Results: What should students know and be able to do? Standards Presentational Communication 1.3 Students present info, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics. Practices and Perspectives 2.1 Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practices and perspectives of the culture studied. Objectives The students will be able to list common health problems in LA. The students will be able to compare the health issues in LA with those in the US and conjecture why differences exist. Materials school-issued laptops, poster board (optional) Acceptable Evidence: How will you know if students have achieved the desired results? Teacher will circulate as students work in groups. As students present, teacher listens to make sure all students have a clear understanding of the issues.

Warm-Up: Have students respond to the following questions in their journals: Have you ever been sick? What did you do when you were sick? 2. Discuss warm-up responses. Remind students that not everyone in LA has access to health services because of the inequality. 3. Split students into 5 groups and assign each group a health issue common in LA. Groups must research the issue, tell what it is, its prevalence, causes, symptoms, and treatments or solutions. Groups will present their topic in a creative manner-poster, powerpoint, song, story, etc.

4. Each group will be able to work for the rest of the class and will present the next class period.
