Lesson Objective 1

When given instruments and explanations of examples, the students will be able to identify and demonstrate the effects of forces and motion such as gravity, magnetism, and friction. Students will complete this with 80% accuracy.

Before the lesson, I will determine what the students already know about forces and motion by giving a short pre-test. During the lesson, I will ask them to demonstrate each term (gravity, magnetism, and friction) in their own way. They will also be assessed during the class discussion about questions on a worksheet. After the lesson, I will have students share with the class one thing they learned both about the instruments and the science topic. They will retake the pre-test for a quiz grade if time permits. If time does not permit, then they will take it the next day.

Pre: I will create a checklist to rate their prior knowledge of effects forces and motion have one gravity, magnetism, and friction from 1-5 (5 being the most prior understanding and 1 being the least). During: I will walk around the classroom listening to children's conversations and reading what they have written in their science notebook. The students will also be given questions to answer in their science notebook to provide more data for assessing. Post: I will gather information for assessing when the students present the information they learned from the lesson.

I will modify instruction as needed. If the students seem lost during or after the demonstrations of each concept, I will review and discuss the concept in further detail. I will demonstrate each action used as examples for the science concepts before I have the students complete it. I will give extra attention to the students who need it.

SC Curriculum Standard(s): Standard 5-5 The student will demonstrate an understanding of the nature of force and motion.

SC Academic Indicator(s): 5-5.1 Illustrate the effects of force (including magnetism, gravity, and friction) on motion.

Description of Assessment Plan I will be teaching a science lesson to fifth grade students about the effects of force on gravity, friction, and magnetism through motion. I plan to take advantage of several assessing strategies that I can use before, during, or after the lesson to ensure student progress is taking place. I will also use this information to assess if the students understand the information that was taught. I will determine what students already know about forces and motion before the lesson is taught. The students take a five question pre-test before we begin the lesson. While they are taking the test, I will walk around to see what they are putting for their answers. I will take note of their answers and use those to help me know what I need to focus on the most during the lesson. I will take up the pre-tests before I begin teaching the lesson so students are not tempted to change their answers. I will then ask similar questions to see if any students have any ideas about the concept already. I will compare the pre-test to the quiz that they take after the lesson is taught; both with cover the same material. During the lesson, I will constantly be assessing the students through observation and listening to what each student brings to the table. I will take mental notes of students who seem confused about the topic and try to include them more in the class discussion to determine if they are progressing or at a standstill. I will have the students display their knowledge and understanding in their science notebooks through answering a list of questions I provide. After they finish answering the questions, we will hold a class discussion. During the discussion, students will present their answers to the questions. This will also give them the opportunity to present any connections they can make from this lesson to their personal lives. During the lesson is where a majority of the assessing will take place.

After the lesson, the students will be given a quiz on the material we covered. The quiz will have similar questions to the pre-test. There will not be a review because the purpose of the quiz is to see if they retained any of the information that was taught. I will then compare the pretest to their quiz. Assessing before, during, and after the lesson will give me data I can use to really measure the students progress and understanding of the topic. It will help me determine when I need to spend more time and when I can spend less time on a certain topic. This information will keep me on track and ensure that I will not be boring the students during the lesson if they already have a clear understanding of the material. The information will also help me to know what level of understanding the students have and their level of thinking will help me know what level to teach on. If they understand the material, I will stretch them even further; if they do not understand the material, then I will take a step back to discuss that particular topic in further detail.
