Acid-Base Lab
The pH of a solution is a measure of how much acid (H+) or base (OH-)
is present in a solution. The scale ranges from 1-14 with an acid (H+)
having a pH of less than 7 and a base (OH-) having a pH of greater
than 7. A neutral solution has a pH of 7.

In this activity you will predict the pH of common household liquids,

state whether they are an acid or a base, then confirm your prediction
by testing the solutions with pH paper.

pH acid/base pH acid/base
Vinegar

Baking soda

Mouthwash
Hand Sanitizer

Analysis
1. Which solutions contained the most hydroxide ions
(OH)?
2. What can you say about the amount of hydrogen ions
relative to the amount of hydroxide ions in a solution
that has a pH of 2?
