Objectives
1. To know the experimental procedure to prepare red
cabbage
2. To know the result of dissolving acids & bases in Red
Cabbage
3. To know some info. about red cabbage
4. To know what's the meaning of indicators and its job
5. To identify the pH level of compounds. By testing
common household substances.
The preparation of Red cabbage Solution

A. Bring a Red Cabbage

B. Put the cabbage in the mixture

C. Power the boiled or hot water

D. Power the Red Cabbage liquid with the same amount in all

cups

Red Cabbage
1. The red cabbage is a sort of cabbage, also known as purple cabbage, red kraut,
or blue kraut after preparation.
2. Its leaves are colored dark red/purple. However, the plant changes its color
according to the pH value of the soil.
3. In acidic soils, the leaves grow more reddish, in neutral soils they will grow
more purple, while an alkaline soil will produce rather greenish-yellow colored
cabbages. This explains the fact that the same plant is known by different colors
in various regions.
4. Furthermore, the juice of red cabbage can be used as a home-made pH
indicator, turning red in acid and green/yellow in basic solutions.
5. Red cabbage juice contains anthocyanin and can be used as a pH indicator. It is
red, pink, or magenta in acids, (pH < 7), blue in neutral solutions (pH ~ 7), and
ranges from turquoise to green to yellow in alkaline solutions (pH > 7).
pH Indicators
1. A pH indicator: is a halochromic chemical compound that is added in small

amounts to a solution so that the pH (acidity or basis) of the solution can be

determined visually.

2. Hence a pH indicator is a chemical detector for hydronium ions (H3O+) or

hydrogen ions (H+). Normally, the indicator causes the color of the solution to

change depending on the pHs.

3. At 25 °C, considered the standard temperature, the pH value of a neutral

solution is 7.0. Solutions with a pH value below 7.0 are considered acidic,

whereas solutions with pH value above 7.0 are basic (alkaline).

Conclusion
Acids and Bases are very important to the modern
society and in our daily lives. We come in contact with
acids and bases every single day, whether we realize it
or not. It is in our body and in our surroundings. If
acids and bases had not been discovered the world
would look so much different to how it looks now.
Conclusion
You saw that there are acid substances and basic substances. They react
with each other, producing salts. The acid-basic degree is expressed in
pH To measure the acid-basic degree of a substance, you can use pH
papers like litmus paper, indicators like phenolphthalein, electronic pH
meters, Hydrangea macrophylla, phenolphthalein Many other natural
substances of vegetable origin have the property to change color
because of the acidity of the environment. We used the juice of the red
cabbage as an indicator and we obtained pH papers. We determined the
color scale of these papers.
