AP Language Summative Assignment

The Things They Carried

1. In your combat squad, go behind enemy lines to take control of AP College Board Headquarters (HQ) by writing and answering your own AP style synthesis prompt to incorporate various short pieces of texts on the Vietnam War. 2. First, think a question youd like to answer. Then do some research. Find five to seven sources which will help you synthesize an answer to your prompt. Each squad member should find one piece of text of 1-3 paragraphs related to the Vietnam War. (The instructor suggests a paragraph from the novel, a political speech and /or a newspaper editorial supporting the war, the same against the war, a chart of statistics (casualties and/or costs, etc.), a descriptive passage on the wars effects on the country, and a political cartoon or photo on the war.) 3. Identify each source as Source A, Source B, Source C, etc., give the full MLA citation at the top of the appropriate page, and write the name of the group member who found it. Give an introductory statement before your question/prompt, and list the author of each passage and Sources A, B, C, etc. on your Instructions/Prompt page. See sample. 4. Then ANSWER the question synthesizing ALL five to seven sources as if your were writing the AP Language Synthesis question in May. (Each member should write at least a paragraph.) Be sure to write and introduction and a conclusion (together). Cite the sources appropriately in the text. Type your answers (at least 7-9 paragraphs, double spaced, in Times New Roman 12 font). Some examples of good synthesis questions/prompts would be
How did the Vietnam War impact - the Vietnamese people? the soldiers serving in it? Americans living at home? future military actions by the US? Afghanistan?

Organize appropriately, staple everything together, and hand in. BRING ALL TEAM MEMBERS BACK ALIVE! Due Monday, April 21
