AP ONE SHEET: NOVEL

For the duration of our silent reading time, you will be answering and analyzing the following questions/topics.
Answers must be thorough and coherent. The final product must be typed in a standard 12 point font. Follow the format
below (include numbers and the items in bold).
1.

(1 pt.) Title

(1 pt.) Author and Publishing date

3.

(1 pt.) Country of author

4.

(15 pts.) Major characters with an insightful one-paragraph (4-6 sentences) description of each. In the
paragraph, include:
a.

What motivates the character to do what they do?

b.

Pay attention to whether or not characters are round, flat, dynamic, static, protagonists, or antagonists.
Include these in your description; do not just state them at the end.

(10 pts.) Minor characters with description, including their purpose in the work.

6.

(10 pts.) Three main settings with description and the authors use of each. (Why does the author use this
setting?)

7.

(5 pts.) Plot outline (detailed, chronological list of 5-10 major events not a paragraph.)

8.

(10 pts.) Major themes of the work with support of each theme. (The theme is to be stated in one sentence
with 2-3 sentences of support following.)

9.

(15 pts.) Conflicts list the types of conflicts with an explanation of each. In the explanation, include:
a.

Internal (man v. self) as well as external (man v. man; man v. society; man v. nature; man v. fate)
conflicts. (Your novel may not include all external conflicts listed above discuss as many as possible.)

b.

Also, how does each of your conflicts relate to the themes that you have previously stated?

10. (5 pts.) At least three specific examples of imagery (quote them) and an explanation of each. Also, which type
was the most dominant in your novel? (Imagery is descriptive language that appeals to the senses.)
EX: The sound of flies buzzing or the smell of a rose.
(Note the different types of imagery: Visual, Olfactory, Gustatory, Auditory, Tactile.)
11. (10 pts.) Symbolism- Find three symbols and write a description of each.
12. (3 pts.) Significance of the title of the work.
13. (3 pts.) Point of view from which the work is written and its significance.
14. (5 pts.) The authors style. What techniques make up the authors style of writing? Explain. (Dialogue, complex
sentences, simple sentences, imagery, different points of view, etc.)
15. (6 pts.) Two quotes from the book that are typical of its content or represent the novel as a whole, with a 2-3
sentence elaboration of the significance of each quote.
