To Kill a Mockingbird Character Analysis

In this classic novel there are many characters that have stood the test of time. You are
going to choose one and truly analyze their qualities in both a sketch and a literary paragraph;
demonstrating your knowledge both of the novel and of the characterization process.
What is a Character Analysis or Character Sketch?
A character sketch is a written/ visual description of a character in a story, novel or play. The
purpose is to create a picture of the person based on description and interpretation. You must
also provide concrete examples from the story to support each of your opinions.
Characterization refers to how characters are developed or described by the author.
Characters are revealed in many ways throughout a story:
What a character says (dialogue).

What a character thinks (internal monologue).

What a character does (actions/reactions). What others say or think about the character
(narration)
Instructions:
1) Use your character chart we have created in class, and choose one character you would
like to sketch and analyze.
2) Choose the five most important traits / descriptions for that character.
3) Collect a series of quotes from the novel (complete with page numbers) and use them to
help shape your character.
4) Sketch you character based on the descriptions from the novel. You can also incorporate
a context to the picture: being either symbolic or literal.
5) Around your character, integrate at least five quotations that exemplify and support the
character traits you've chosen.
6) Write a literary paragraph that formally analyzes the character you have chosen. You
will be using some of the same quotations you have collected during your sketch. This
will be in the same expository style as our "Harrison Bergeron" paragraphs.
