WHAT ARE CHARACTER TRAITS?
Character traits are qualities, attributes, or
characteristics that make up the personality or
behaviour of a fictional character.

These traits can be both positive AND

negative, and shape the way a character thinks,
feels, and acts in a narrative.

EXAMPLE:

Brave (e.g. a hero!)

Evil (e.g. a villain!)
A WELL-CRAFTED CHARACTER…

The author can tell us these traits directly, but will mostly SHOW us the
character traits in action. Our job as readers is to figure out the character traits
from what the character says, thinks, and does.

CHARACTER
DEVELOPMENT
WHAT IS CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT?
Character development is the journey of
crafting evolving characters in a narrative,
revealing their growth over time.

Authors achieve character development through

descriptive language, character interactions,
and inner conflicts.

EXAMPLE:
Scrooge (A Christmas Carol) goes from being
mean and nasty to nice and generous.
