DEVELOPMENTAL MILESTONES

0 TO FOUR MONTHS Infant's head represents about 1/4 of the total body length at birth Baby squints at objects close to them at 1 to 2 days Baby lies on stomach with chest up and supporting self with arms Able to pull self to sitting position with reasonable good head control if adult holds hands Opens and closes hands carefully May hold object for a few moments Legs may start to straighten from inward curving newborn position (2 months) May swipe at dangling objects (3 months) Reaches with arms Clenches rattle and puts it in mouth Will double weight Grown four more inches Tooth may erupt at 4 or 5 months May sleep through the night at 4 months Baby will turn head toward the breast when cheek is stroked FIVE TO EIGHT MONTHS May swap object from hand to hand May hold bottle Develops more control over body May utter consonants Reaches out when sitting Learns to make new sound by changing shape of mouth Rolls over Cause and effect is perceived Clasps hands and enjoys banging objects together May grab for a toy with one hand Able to support own weight May sit by pushing up on arms Can make several sounds in one breath Can recognize different tones

Learns to open fingers at will and drop or throw objects Coordination improves May start to crawl (backwards first) Imitates broad range of sounds Turns head to familiar noises

NINE TO TWELVE MONTHS Can roll a ball back and forth May begin to cut teeth Is able to crawl Able to feed themselves Can interact playfully Can transfer objects from hand to hand Utilizes pincer grasp Imitates sound Shakes head "yes" and "no" Waves bye-bye Responds to voices Uses expressive jargon Begins to use symbolic representation EIGHTEEN MONTHS The anterior fontanel is nearly closed 6-19 new teeth will appear Begins to have a more adult-like appearance Chest circumference is larger than the head Can push or carry things when walking Voluntarily drops objects Will scribble with crayons Can stack blocks and build a small tower Can feed themselves Can crawl up and down stairs Will help turn pages in a book Can help undress by removing shoes, socks "No" is a big word may begin to learn as many as 12 words a day vocabulary starts to explode imitates those around them can combine 2 or 3 words to make a sentence
