Tenzin Nanchung 09/23/13 Hypothesis: Chromatography Lab Report

Bio 111 Lab Section 02

For this lab we explore how chemical structures relate to physical properties and use this to come to a conclusion about their patterns. For the experiment one of the dyes we will use; Methyl red is a hydrophilic molecule so my hypothesis is that it will have a high because the oxygen atoms can create hydrogen bonds and will

want to bind to water molecules more than the paper, so it will cover a large distance. Experiment: For the experiment the dyes we used were: Oil red, Methyl Green, Methyl Blue, Methyl Red. We applied all of these dyes on a labeled chromatography paper. The paper was then dipped in salt water, our solvent, and covered with Para film. We watched the solvent and dyes rise and some didnt move at all. Once the solvent reached 1 cm away from the top of the paper we stopped our experiment and recorded the results. Results: From the experiment our results showed that Methyl Red covered the largest distance at 5.5cm and Oil red covered the least distance at 0.5cm. Methyl Greens distance was 4.5cm and Methyl Blues distance was 5.5cm. The solvent (NaCl) covered a distance of 7.5cm. Using the equation below, we can calculate the

Distance traveled 0.5cm 4.5cm 2.5cm 5.5cm 7.5cm

Conclusion: From the experiment we can conclude that the data agrees with my hypothesis. If we look at the structure of Methyl Red we can see the oxygen and Nitrogen atoms, which are able to create hydrogen bonds. We can also see that they have charges on them, which means they are very hydrophilic. Oil reds structure contains only one hydroxide molecule and a large cluster of non-polar bonds. The amount of hydrophobic interactions overwhelms the one-hydroxide molecule, which is hydrophilic, and thus results as a high hydrophobic molecule. From the values we can observe that the more hydrophilic the compound is, the higher value of .
