0 Specimen Collection: Collecting a Catheter Specimen Purpose

To use catheter to obtain sterile urine specimen from child

Delegation This task can be performed by all members of healthcare team; it does not require licensure or credentials to perform this task* *Always check agency policy and applicable scope of practice Preparation

Consult hospital or institution procedure manual or other references for more detailed and specific information when needed Identify child and introduce self; use at least two client identifiers when providing care, treatment, or services Explain the purposes of the procedure Verify order specimen written Provide for client privacy Perform hand hygiene and adhere to standard precautions Prepare equipment: o Clean gloves o Clamp o Alcohol swab o Syringe with needle or needleless adapter o Sterile specimen container

Post-Procedure Promptly send container to laboratory Assess childs response to procedure Tell child to inform you of any discomfort (these instructions should be given before, during, and after procedure); if child is too young to verbalize discomfort, observe for signs or cues of discomfort Provide any instructions for child Clean work area and provide for child comfort Perform hand hygiene and adhere to standard precautions Expected Outcome

Unexpected Outcome Inside of sterile container will become contaminated causing break in sterility. Process will have to be repeated Documentation

Follow institutional guidelines Label container with name, date, and time

Sample Documentation 1400: Sterile urine specimen obtained from Foley catheter per hospital protocol. 10 mL amber urine collected. Foley catheter draining freely after procedure.
