The Northern Gateway Pipeline is a dual pipeline which means there are two pipelines side by side.

The westbound pipeline will transport 525,000 barrels/day of oil. The eastbound pipelines will carry 193,000 barrels/day of condensate. Condensate is a chemical which thins the oil.

Proposed Northern Gateway Pipeline!

Enbridge has proposed a route from Bruderheim, A.B, which is northwest of Edmonton, to Kitimat, B.C. This route covers 1,177 km of ground and will cost an estimate of $5.5-6.5 billion to build. Enbridge has indicated that 70% of the route will take advantage of previously disturbed lands. This means that the pipeline will use logged or barren lands.

This pipeline is estimated to add $270 billion towards CGDP (Canadian Gross Domestic Production) over a period of 30 years. This project would allow foreign markets to receive the oil coming from Albertas Oil Sands. This will increase oil-sands production and expansion because there is now more room for oil to be transported. Spills from the pipeline and tankers are a big potential risk, as they threaten many species. A tanker spill would have many affects on aboriginal communities and marine animals along the coast of B.C. This pipeline would fragment parts of forest along the route which is the habitat for the endangered Woodland Caribou.

The westbound pipeline, which carries oil is 36 inches in diameter. The eastbound pipeline which carries condensate is 20 inches in diameter.

Over the construction of the pipeline, 3,000 jobs will be created as well as an estimated 1,150 long term jobs in Canada. These long term jobs include management, people to fill the tankers, and people who watch or take care of spills.
