Checklist for Asbestos Work

Risk Management 1 2 3 Steps are taken to ascertain whether the work to be undertaken involves asbestos. Where necessary, samples are taken and sent for analysis. Risk assessment has been conducted and documented for asbestos work. Asbestos Control 6 7 8 9 10 Asbestos work area is demarcated and isolated from other work areas by means of suitable and adequate barricades or enclosures to restrict access to unauthorized persons Exhaust ventilation equipment is provided, maintained and used to prevent the spread of asbestos dust. Wet method is used where feasible to ensure asbestos fibres do not become airborne. Asbestos work area and all asbestos contaminated surfaces are kept clean and free from accumulations of asbestos waste and dust. Air monitoring is carried out to ensure asbestos dust in the air does not exceed the permissible exposure limit (0.1 fibre/cc).

Personal Protective Equipment 11 12 13 Suitable respiratory protective equipment and protective clothing are provided to all persons carrying out asbestos work. Respiratory protective equipment correctly fits the person it is provided for. Fit testing is conducted and the record is available. Adequate facilities are provided for the decontamination of persons carrying out asbestos work.

Medical Examinations 14 15 Workers are certified fit for asbestos work by a designated factory doctor (DFD) before employment. Medical examinations are conducted for all persons exposed to asbestos once every 3 years.

Hazard Communications 16 17 18 Training is provided to persons at work (who are liable to be exposed to asbestos) to inform them of the risks involved and the precautionary measures to be taken. Warning signs indicating the hazard of asbestos are placed at entrances to the work area and at appropriate locations. Asbestos materials and waste are kept in closed receptacles and clearly labeled to warn of the hazard.
