FS 4603 Occupational Issues Career Map (50 points) Spring 2014 I. Setting long term goals A.

Project your title, salary, and responsibilities along the following time line: 1. 1 year from graduation Police Officer- 60,000 visiting domestic violence situations Sexuality Educator- 40,000 educating public on normal human sexuality and contraceptive use 2. 3 years from graduation Police Officer- 70,000 preferred officer for family-related incidents Sexuality Educator- 45,000 educating public with small team on normal human sexuality and contraceptive use 3. 5 years from graduation Police Officer 77,000 training other officers for family-related incidents Sexuality Educator Specialist 50,000 educating professionals on teaching the public about normal human sexuality and contraceptive use 4. You may want to project alternative career scenarios contingent upon alternative events in both your personal and professional life. Your career map may be multipath, not just a single option or choice.

Note the points at which you see roadblocks or conflicts in your action plan. 1. Institutional conflicts a. with people (e.g. colleagues, supervisors, people in other departments) Colleagues and supervisors not taking my specializations seriously as an asset. b. with institutional structures and policies May have to create small sub department if there is none. c. with external forces impacting the institution Some may feel sexuality is an inappropriate topic to discuss. 2. Personal conflicts a. with people (e.g. spouses, children, parents, friends, others) May be challenging to balance custody and find babysitters, especially if I am require to relocate or travel. b. internal (e.g. personal value conflicts, time and energy requirements, self-doubts, etc.) Difficulty allotting me time and relieving stress after difficult events.

Describe the options and needs for credential building, licenses, or advanced degrees to support your goals. CFLE wouldnt be mandatory for all positions, but desired. Ride-alongs would be helpful, eventual masters and doctoral degrees would be a great benefit, and police academy.

She doesnt know herself and focuses on the faults in everyone else to avoid talking about her own short-comings. 5. Name a person who is like you and describe this person. Hannah on the HBO show Girls. She is very flawed but open about it and, while often unsure of what she needs, she continues to work toward the goals she has set for herself. 6. In the last two weeks, what activities or people gave you a feeling of being energized? Ive been going to the TWU gym every other day or so and its really helped me focus on myself and feel more awake in the mornings. 7. What have you always wanted to do in your life? Whats keeping you from doing it? Ive always wanted to be a mother and, while I have two children, I find myself feeling overwhelmed and anxious when I spend 12 hours with them every day. 8. What action(s) could you take in the next year to get closer to this goal? Ive recently separated from my husband and weve worked out a schedule to split time with the boys- giving us time to be alone. 9. What habit have you successfully changed? Drinking to forget my problems. 10. What three words would you like others to use in describing you? Intelligent, funny, pretty.

B. Two Perfect Days 1. Written description: In order to be clear about what you want in your life, write a two-page description of two ideal days in your future. One day should be related to leisure, and one day should be related to work. Think about where you would be, what youd be doing, who (if anyone) would be with you, etc. Try to be as detailed as possible.

2. Summary: Write two or three words or phrases that would capture the essence of the quality of these two days, e.g. peaceful, harmonious, challenging, productive, beneficial to others, restful, exciting, fun, etc. The summary can be written at the bottom of the second page in the two-page description.
