COMMUNICATION FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES

LESSON 1 - THINK!

Activity 1. What does “intellectual engagement” mean to you? Explain your answer in five sentences.
- For me intellectual engagement is the process of interacting or engaging in activities that
stimulates one’s own critical thinking and instinctive hunger for knowledge and information. It
produces an effect that benefits the mind of people engaging with these activities, as well as the
formulation of ideas that they themselves can’t think of when they are being passive and not doing
anything. I also believed that intellectual engagement is closely related to recreational activities
and in a way, it expands our understanding for things and it refreshes our mind and body from
stress and fatigue. For Intellectual engagement to work effectively, there is a term that I
encountered at the internet that I think that is crucial for these situations, it is Sense-making; An
effective intellectual engagement requires opportunities for students to make sense of the ideas
they have encountered and explored, regardless of how interesting the activities are, it is the
teacher's responsibility to ensure that students make sense of their activities by insightful
questioning, class discussion facilitation, and/or explanations because they are most likely unable
to draw the proper conclusions on their own if the subject matter that was being discussed were
vague.
Activity 2. Cite some consequences when you commit plagiarism.
- First let’s define what is Plagiarism; plagiarism means the act of getting and using someone’s idea
and work without citing the source and acknowledging the author. This is a bad action that all
students must learn not to do. Some consequences of doing plagiarism were; it can slow down
their creativity and critical thinking, because they are not being subjected to growth and challenge
if they are just copying someone’s work. It can also lead to Academic punishment if you are caught
plagiarizing; it can ruin your academic career and you may even be expelled. Plagiarism can not
only affect the one who did it but it can also affect the company or organization the he/ she
belongs to. So, in order for you not get in trouble; learn not to plagiarize and work on your own
and make the most of your critical thinking skills and creative mind, and if you have gotten an idea
derived from a source always remember to cite it properly.

LESSON 2 - THINK!

Activity 1. Write an essay on any topic of your choice. You may need to do some research about the topic in
order to better explain it. The essay is organized as follows:
Introduction- one or two paragraphs, Body – at least three paragraphs Conclusion- one or two paragraphs
Your essay will be given points using the following rubric:
Content -10 points, Organization- 10 points, Language and Mechanics- 10 points.
In The Mind of Mine

Is it all just inside of my head? A question that keeps ringing in my mind. Maybe or
maybe not? The uncertainty that comes when you overthink of something and realized that
you do not have the grasp over the situation. The helplessness of wanting to change the past
but do not have the control over the time.
When I was a child, it would have been great and much more simple knowing, that
Cortisol- a hormone which regulates our stress level was the one responsible of me
overthinking things, right? In the end, I have learned the truth the hard way. The truth that
there are still factors that causes us much pain and headaches, the ones that make us feel so
heavy, the cause which makes one vulnerable and broken. I had wished that I forget about the
things that made me down, but when my anxiety strikes, it comes with a package of
overthinking and those ‘what ifs’. The depression that I felt, when hopelessness and despair
takes over the atmosphere and restrict me from functioning properly. It feels empty, lifeless,
and apathetic if I must say.
I go to school carrying their expectations and go home with a burden, thinking if my
scores would be enough in getting me a high grade. If not, then I will have to bear the
consequences of people judging me, adding to the near filled bucket of resentment, hatred and
disgust to this system which makes me lose my confidence and self- esteem. There are also
times when I am giving my best and stressing myself out just to make my family proud, but
they make me feel that it was not enough. Constantly asking myself where did I go wrong, and
what did I do to deserve this. I just want to give up that time. Comparing me to someone also
leads me breaking down in tears, because they want me to be perfect and I should have all the
qualities they want, but I am just a human. A human that can be hurt, feels joy, experiencing
sorrow, and enjoying what we call life.
As time goes by, I got fed up by the repeating process of my self-getting hurt by the
things that has not yet happened or isn’t happening at all. I learned to look at the brighter side
of things, not thinking what the others will say about me, and not caring about other’s
comments about my looks as long as I am good with it. I also realized that overthinking was
not that bad if you know how to utilize it. Because of my obsession on getting answers and
being assured of things; I am enhancing my problem solving and critical thinking skills if I
would just find the solution to my problems. Thinking of alternative ways if one process would
not work. I am also using my trait of overthinking - formulating what possible questions that
I will have to answer on my quizzes, summative, and exams. It also helps me to dream of a
better future, see myself getting better on what I’m good at, and be successful in life.
It all comes down on what is our perception on overthinking and how do we take this
as a challenge. Always remember that no matter what people say about us, about their doubts,
and things that they say we can’t do; what matter is that we are still moving forward and
continuing to grow. As long as you are not stepping on other people, keep doing what you
love. As I am a person who constantly overthink, I am grateful that I realized how tremendous
my potential is and I can finally say that all the things that I worry about was all in the mind
of mine.
LESSON 3 - THINK!

Activity 1. Assume that you are going to speak before an audience composed of professionals on a perennial
and relevant topic, for instance, “Smoking.” Find out as much about your audience by answering the
following questions:
1. Who is likely to attend your talk?
- The ones who are most likely to attend my speech were the people who want to quit smoking but
can’t get away from the grip of nicotine. Some of the relative of smokers were also expected to
come, to know more about smoking and their bad effects on those around them. Youths, students,
and also honored guest may be seen in attending because the talk about smoking brings
awareness to these kinds of people, and it may benefit them in the future.
2. What is their background (education, profession, age range, gender)?
- I think most of them would be high school and college students. Company employees are also the
most people who uses cigarettes because they use this to relieve them from the stress from works.
According to Reitsma, et. al. (2021), the average age range for the ones who smoke where 15-24
among youths and they began to regularly smoking during the age of 20 – 54 years old by the year
2019. Most of them were Men but there should be some women smokers who is interested about
the contents of the speech.
3. How will you convince them to stop their smoking habit?
- If it comes to convincing them to stop smoking, the right speech to use in these kinds of situation
would be a persuasive speech. During the talk I must present the background of cigarette, nicotine,
and what is smoking. Then I will proceed to talk about the bad effects of smoking to our body,
most specially to our lungs. As smoking greatly affects our respiratory system, I can show a
representation of a smoker’s body. Lastly, I will summarize all of the points of my talk and openly
convince them to stop smoking, because there are other ways to relieve their stress and problems,
and say my thanks before ending the speech.
Activity 2. Write a one paragraph (which consist of six to eight sentences) entertainment speech. Your goal
is to amuse the audience by using humor, jokes and stories.
- Good morning to everyone here, I might as well introduce myself first, right? So, my name was
John J. John, from John Virginia…My favorite book was the book of John, obviously from the bible
what else? And yes, my middle name is John. Now uhm… let’s go to my strengths and weaknesses,
every time I say my strengths and weaknesses I always starts at “I am a Fast Learner”, but behind
that trait they didn’t know I also have short term memory loss. Yeah, ignorance is a bliss I must
say. And the only weakness that I can think of is… I don’t have a someone who will spent forever
with me… aww, “Che! Walang forever no” … as you can see, I may be a little bit bitter, but just a
little bit HAHAHA. You know what guys I always hear gaslighting is bad, but I differ. You know I am
gaslighting myself that it’s alright when I get 19/60 in my exams and here, I am today, alive and
kicking… it works every time baby! Guys, I have a question, does anyone of you have a friend that
is undecided of what course they will take in college? Well, I have one and my advice for her was
to take Psychology… and then she said “why?” then I said “Coz you like judging people, that’s why”
… and that was the greatest day in my life and I am glad that I advised her that time, why? Well of
course I have a discount when consulting in a mental hospital that she works in. Thank you
everyone and have a blessed day.
LESSON 4 - THINK!

Activity 1. Formulate two questions each from the type of interviews questions.
Open-Ended Questions:
1. Can you tell me about your best high school experience?
2. For you, what is the purpose of life?
Direct Questions:
1. What is your age?
2. Do you want an ice cream?
Mirror-Type Questions:
1. Tell me more about those struggles of yours in the company?
2. Then how did you cope up with it?
Probing Questions:
1. What do you mean when you said life is but an endless cycle?
2. Can you justify that he is a good man as you have said?
Loaded Questions:
1. We have an applicant who has 4 years of experience in this field, why should we hire you instead?
2. I have seen a similar product on the market, why should I invest on you?
Problem-Solving Questions:
1. If you are in a sinking ship, who would you save, your wife or your mother?
2. What would you do if you are wrongly accused of a crime you didn’t do?
Activity 2. Why should you take seriously any opportunity that comes your way and that requires you to
deliver a talk?
- How scary it may seem, in our lifespan there would be times that we need to deliver a speech to
the public or deliver a talk for the others to hear. We need to grab every opportunity like this,
because it brings challenge to us to overcome our social anxiety and stage fright. It also builds up
our confidence and self- esteem. If you deliver talks and speeches very well, there you can build
up connection and send the message of your speech much more clearly. Lastly, it can build up
trust for yourself as well as your audience, this gives you more credibility and people will pay more
attention when you are speaking.

A Promise of Thousands of Deaths

The former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, promised that he will end the drug
trafficking in the Philippines in only six months, it is during his campaign for presidency for
the 2016 Presidential Elections. This resulted to a hot debate whether he can fulfill his promise
or not. Many experts also claims that it is not possible to erase the tracks and roots of drugs in
the Philippines in just only six months. This movement of former PDU30 was called “War on
Drugs”, and it didn’t goes as expected.
The War on Drugs led the Philippines in a time of terror, fear, and anxiety for the public
safety. During this event many has became victims of extra judicial killings leaving their
family unattended, and the government just let their families live in terror from the trauma
they suffered. According to a study by Human Rights Watch, police are fabricating evidence
to support the murders. Despite that, Duterte has pledged to carry out the campaign regardless
of rising calls for an investigation. The explicit actions of the police in killing drug addicts and
users and reasoned it with just self- defense, made people paint them unreliable and
untrustworthy. This resulted to the idea “don’t trust the authorities” which disturbed the public
and caused mass panic; because they will never know if they would be the next target of the
unjustifiable killings of Filipino people during that time.
Many of our ‘Kababayans’ are raising their voice to stop the campaign as it is already
affecting the wellbeing of the whole nation. More and more deaths were tallied every day, and
it has led up to 12,000 deaths of Filipino people, most of them were urban poor. Along with
these deaths, the families and loved ones who experience this has become traumatized, most
especially the children. It had become lasting harm to children like Jennifer who was
interviewed about her experience when she saw her father being shot and how does it affect
her. Based on the documentary, it affected her mentally and emotionally. What she
experienced had her start losing appetite and she doesn’t want to eat, mainly because of the
trauma. She turns her attention in drawing and writing stories; but despite that, she can’t finish
what she had started when it comes to drawing her complete family. She said that there is
something that is missing whenever she wanted to draw her family.
With the current situations and events, it eventually caught the attention of United
Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). With the High
commissioner stating that “People who use or sell drugs do not lose their human rights”. On
September 13, 2022, the OHCHR also published a report urging the Philippine government
to address major human rights gaps, notably with regard to accountability for violations
associated with the "war on drugs". Along with the war on drug campaign, it is not only
the drug users and suspects were the victim of it. Human rights defenders, advocates,
journalist and many more has also been killed. According to Rappler; 421 activist, human
rights defenders, and grassroot organizers; 22 journalist, and media workers; 65 judges,
lawyers, and prosecutors has been killed as of August 31 – December 8, 2021. This shows
that seeking justice is almost impossible during those times, because you may get ‘red tagged’-
a label which would be given to individuals or groups (including human rights defenders and
NGOs) as communists or terrorists- as it also restricts the freedom of expression of an
individual calling for justice.
In the case of war on drugs, as a citizen of the republic of the Philippines, we should not
tolerate these kinds of actions and start to voice out our opinions towards justice. What we can
do is to have an advocacy that will lead us to prosperity and peace not to war and spilling of
blood. President Duterte should have done other approach regarding the matter and in an
ethical way, because those are precious human lives and some of them are innocent for the
crimes they didn’t do. It is really saddening to see people suffering from a promise that we
thought will benefit the country but instead caused thousands of deaths.

Test 2. Imagine that you were invited to deliver persuasive speech to junior high school students. The
organizers asked you to choose a topic which would interest them. What are you going to discuss with them?
Write only your introductory paragraph of your persuasive speech.
- I think one of the best topics to be discussed with junior high school students would be about Drug
Addiction and Drug Education. This is because we need to teach and advise them to be careful
around illegal drugs and it will ruin their future if they got into the path of using these drugs.
- Good morning, everyone, my name is Rhowen, your speaker for today in this seminar about Drug
Addiction and Drug Education. Do anyone of you know how bad illegal drugs will affect you if you
take one? Yet there are many of our adolescence uses drugs for short term ecstasy and pleasure.
According to 2020 statistics of the Philippine Dangerous Drug Board, in terms of the age at which
the consumer first tried drugs, forty-one percent (40.55%) are between the ages of 15 and 19.
Almost 37 percent (36.90%) reported using drugs 2 to 5 times per week, while 27 percent (26.54%)
use it monthly and 16 percent (15.93%) daily. So how can we lower those percentage of teens
using illegal drugs? It is through Drug Education.
