Counting & Cardinality: Count to tell the number of objects. K.CC.B.4: Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities ; connect counting to cardinality. A. When counting objects, say the number names in the standard order, pairing each object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one object. B. Understand that the last number name said tells the number of objects counted. The number of objects is the same regardless of their arrangement or the order in which they were counted. C. Understand that each successive number name refers to a quantity that is one larger.
Objectives
Jennifer Ward's book, Somewhere in the Ocean. Ocean activity counting sheet.
Construction paper and crayons for pictures. Pencils for activity sheet. The teacher will read the book, Somewhere in the Ocean. There are hidden numbers on the pages of the book. Have the students find each hidden number as you read the book. Teachers may think aloud their strategies on finding the hidden numbers.
Anticipatory Set
Students will identify the first ten counting numbers with the objects that represent them with by completing their Ocean activity counting sheet with 80% accuracy. Objective

I will show the pages of the book and how as the counting numbers go up so do the number of fish, or other ocean items increase.
I will ask how many whales? How many baby octopuses? I will have them count the objects in the picture.
Guided Practice
Students will count objects around the classroom. An example might be to count the windows in the
room. How many boys have shorts on, how many girls have blonde hair.
Independent Practice
Closure
Students can draw a picture of their favorite ocean animal from the book.
