During the last few weeks we have been collecting data on banning smoking in Alaska and the risks

that comes with smoking. We developed a questionnaire containing a series of questions handed out to the students in out technical writing class. We received 20 questionnaires from people between ages 20 30. One of the questions in our survey asked if they are aware that smoking cigarettes affected their bodies? In Figure 1 the results came out to 100% meaning they all know that the body is affected if they smoke. And 30% admitted to smoking.

In the same questionnaire, we asked if both smoking and non-smoking people knew that cigarettes affect the environment. For which 96% of them said yes and 4% said no. smoking cigarettes impacts the environment by polluting the air destroying forests by starting wild fires and by leaching out toxins into fresh water. In California alone cigarette butts make up nearly 34% of their total waste. Figure 2 shows the results.

Figure 3 illustrates the amount of people who think they are at risk of the second hand smoke, 54% of people think they are sometimes at risk of inhaling second hand smoke, 20% think most of the time they are at risk of inhaling second hand smoke, 20% of people think they are never at risk and 6% said they are always at risk of second hand smoke. In reality you can be exposed to second hand smoke at work, in public places, at home and in the car. There is no safe amount of second hand smoke, even just a small amount can have a bad affect on your body since it contains many harmful chemicals that damage the body that can later cause disease.
