Graduate Program Requirements
Guitar Masters of Music
Objectives
The objective of the Master of Music degree in Guitar is to provide the student with a period of
organized, focused study in preparation for a career in music performance.
Admission Requirements
Applicants must be accepted by audition and meet the general requirements for admission to the
Graduate School and the School of Music. Upon entrance, the student must take the diagnostic
examinations in tonal and 20th-century music theory, ear-training, and music history. Any identified
deficiencies must be remedied during the first year of study.
Admission Requirements
Graduate applicants in guitar should be prepared to perform three major contrasting pieces or
movements from the following materials or from similar works of comparable level: J. S. Bach Lute
Suites; Fernando Sor Advanced Studies, Variations, or Sonatas; Francisco Tarrega Capricho Arabe or
Recuerdos de la Alhambra; Manuel Ponce Sonatas; Heitor Villa-Lobos Preludes or Etudes; Turina
Fandanguillo; Leo Brouwer Elogio de la Danza. An accompanist is not required. Sight-reading and

Program Requirements
Minimum of 30 credits.
1. Emphasis: 18 Credits
MusA 8323, Applied Guitar: 12 credits
Mus5xxx, Ensemble participation in guitar ensemble, chamber music, chorus, or orchestra (when
appropriate): 2 credits
Mus5xxx/8xxx, Courses in the area of literature, pedagogy, or appropriate secondary
instrument: 4 credits
2. Supporting Program: 12 Credits
Mus 5xxx/8xxx, Courses from the areas of Musicology/Ethnomusicology and
Theory/Composition with a minimum of one 3-credit course in each area taken at the University
of Minnesota. Please note, only one theory course at the 4xxx level may count toward your
degree, and only if you take at least one other theory course at the 5xxx or 8xxx level. Half-
semester 4xxx-level courses will not count toward your degree: 9 credits
5xxx/8xxx, Electives (music or non-music): 3 credits
3. Solo Recital
4. Examination
A final oral examination of approximately one hours duration will be administered by the
students examining committee.
