DelftX: AE1110x Introduction to Aeronautical Engineering

Welcome!

We're very happy to have you 'on board' for this MOOC on Aeronautical Engineering, glad you
joined our course! This is self-paced course gives you the freedom to complete our three modules
at your own pace. While the course is designed to allow you to finish within 7 weeks, you are free
to complete the modules anytime between now and 1 February 2016.

This introduction is meant to give you some information on what to expect in the coming 3
modules. In this first block, you will find some practical information, and in the following units you
will find some clips on how edX (this platform) works. Finally (after introducing ourselves), we are
ready to go.

Course set-up

This course will consist of three modules: An introductory module on several aeronautical
concepts, and then two modules, which treat two topics in more depth (One on Aerodynamics and
one on Flight Mechanics). Each of these modules will have a different lecturer, module A even has
two! If you follow this course over 7 weeks, then Module A will take 3 weeks, and modules B and C
take 2 weeks each.

In each section, you will be presented with two to three lectures (split into several short clips), with
some accompanying exercises. In some of these lectures, you will also be presented a challenge: a
practical assignment you can try yourself.

In the last part of each module, there will also be a final test. A short overview of the course
content (what topics are treated in what lecture) can be found in our Course Content file.

Grading

The grading for this course is determined as follows. In each module there will be 'homework
exercises' following the clips, these will count for 25% of the grade of that module. In case of
multiple choice questions (with only one correct answer), you will get two attempts to answer the
question (this is indicated in the question). For all other exercises you will have unlimited attempts.
In the last week of a module, there will then be a test, this final test of the module counts for 75%
of the module grade.

In the final grade for the course, module A counts for 40%, module B counts for 30% and  module
C counts for 30%. This final grade should be a 5.5 or higher (so a 55% completion of the course on
this platform).

Module A : Introduction 40%

Homework: 10%

Test: 30%

Module B: Aerodynamic 30%

Homework: 7.5%

Test: 22.5%

Module C: Flight Mechanics 30%

Homework: 7.5%

Test: 22.5%

In order to pass the course, all assignments must be submitted by 1 February 2016 00.00 UCT.

The course set-up is summarised in the figure below, which includes the weeks and topics of each
module, and the weightings of the assignments/tests of each block:

All information on the course set-up can be gone through in the AE1110x Course Set-up file.
