1. Individual Assignment (15%)


You are to work individually and submit an assignment based on the questions listed below. The word
count for this assignment is 2,000 words (+/- 10%). This assignment is due on the 5
th
of May 2014,
Monday by 2.00pm (Week 7). Further details of this assignment will be discussed during tutorials.

Question 1 (50 marks)
a. There is a say that To remove bureaucracy from an enterprise would be to remove
organisation itself (Watson 2006, p 38). In your opinion, what is the possibility of the abolition
of bureaucracy in an organisation? (20 Marks; approx. 500 words)
b. If organisation is perceived as a living open system, identify the main inputs and outputs and
some of the control actions that adjust inputs as a result of monitoring outputs. You may
choose any organisation or organisational sub-unit in open system terms. See Case 2.1 in
your textbook (Watson 2006, p 44) as a reference for this question. (20 Marks; aprrox. 500
words)
c. List what are the factors contributing to the contradiction of the human element in the
modern work organisation.(10 marks; approx. 100 words)

Question 2 (20 marks)
Explain how implicit contracts and orientations to work influence the strategic exchange of (i) an
individuals and (ii) organisations shape (20 marks; approx. 500 words).

Question 3 (30 marks)
Provide a simple summary to show the distinctions between the three dimensions in The Broad
Managerial Phenomenon (10 marks; approx. 100 words). Discuss differences between the broad
characteristics of more able and less able managers from the perspectives of (i) personal
orientation; (ii) cognitive style; and (iii) interpersonal style. (20 marks; aprrox. 500 words)
