Participants: Libby, Alicia, Jennie

Facilitator: Hannah Kehn
Artifact: student work (artist statements), I Am Poem (Celeste) and photographs
representing process/finished work from arts integrated project at King Elementary

Group followed a Protocol for Looking at Student Work and focused on the
following four questions:

What strikes you about the work?
How similar the What is Deeper Learning Doc is to VTS protocol
How creative students were in their titles and in their thinking about their
masks (artist statements)
The arts vocabulary present in artist statements.
Looking at the photos, I see a uniqueness to the student work. Students are
engaged.

How does this work exemplify deeper learning?

Students are collaborating and cross-sharing ideas to make their work better.
Process is personalized (unique products).
Students are challenged to create something
Students had to take responsibility for structuring their work
Students analyzed their work in their artist statements
Work mimics what adults to in the field
This project to me is linked to a real question of importance (Who am I?)

What questions does it raise for me?

Was a rubric used? How was this project assessed?
How often did the teaching artist participate in this project?
How was the poem connected to the visual art?
Was their an activity prior to this project that introduced students to the
notion of identity?
How were these projects shared orally or with an audience?
Did students revise their artist statements? Critique each others work?

What would make it deeper?

Students having an opportunity to analyze and make connections between
their mask and the masks of others.
Students having to articulate their process and learning to an authentic
audience orally.
Revision of artist statements
How could the artist statements to push students to articulate the choices
they made while creating their masks and how their masks relate/or dont
relate to their I Am Poem.
If this project was designed with students it would be a deeper.

Closing the loop: Participants share takeaways and lingering questions:

Alicia: We do so much work around planning projects. I think we should make the
time to reflect on the student work in this way so we can set goals for next time.
Jennie: I plan on using the bullet points for Deeper Learning as the WHY for project
based learning. We are doing a PD tomorrow for teachers.
Libby: What is Deeper Learning doc will be very helpful. Making sure we give
teachers the why, not just the how.
