Behavioral/Objective
Students will explore their own identity and experiences through artwork.
Students will use their knowledge of watercolor and collage to make an interesting
mixed media project.
Students will use symbols to depict aspects of their life.

Anticipatory Set
Discuss different aspects of an individuals identity.
Discuss what a self-portrait is and share some examples.
Explore different symbols and what they may mean in the context of identity.

Objective/Purpose
Today we are going to start our own self-portrait. We will be using symbols to
demonstrate different parts of our identity and use images to explain who we are. The
background of our self-portrait will be filled with these symbols and images, which will
be painted in watercolor at a later date. In the foreground, we will place a silhouette of
our actual heads.

Thinking Levels
By the end of this lesson, students will be at the application level. They will use their
knowledge of self-portraits, symbols, and their own identities to create a work of art.

Materials
White paper 18X12
Black Paper 9X12
Pencils, glue sticks, scissors
Watercolor paints

Independent Practice
Students will alternate between two activities. For a majority of the class period, they
will be working on developing the symbols related to their identity and drawing them on
their white paper.
Students will also take turns using the document camera and projector screen to trace
their profiles.

Closure
Have students share a couple symbols they decided to include in their projects.
Explain what will happen next week.
