Christopher McKenney
Chris McKenney enters his 13th season as head coach of the Maine Maritime Academy football
team, and his 30th season of coaching at the collegiate level.
Over the past 12 seasons at Maine Maritime, McKenneys teams have brought plenty of excitement to Ritchie Field. McKenney was named 2009 New England Division II/III Coach of the Year
after leading his team to the NCAA Playoffs. He was named the NEFC Coach of the Year in 2005
and NEFC Bogan Division Coach of the Year in 2006 and 2008. Many of McKenneys players have
received distinguished honors, including AFCA All-American, AP All-American, New England Gold
Helmet Division II/III Player of the Year, Academic All-Conference, NEFC Rookie of the Year, NEFC
Offensive/Defensive Player of the Year, ECAC Player of the Year and three players in the last five
years have been named Greater Boston Gridiron Club Division II/III Player of the Year.
2010 brought another Bogan division title and third straight appearance in the NEFC championship
game and a trip to the ECAC Bowl. The Mariners again led the nation in rushing and broke three
NCAA records. Most rushing yards gained 5,188 in a season, most yards gained per game rushing
471.64 and most TDs per rush 5.45 60 rushing TDs in eleven games. The Mariners broke many
school and conference records and continue to be one of the top offenses in NCAA division three.
The 2009 season was full of highlights. The Mariners captured the NEFC Championship and made
its first trip to the NCAA Playoffs in school history winning 9 games, leading the nation in rushing
yards (4,419) and breaking numerous school and conference records, including breaking the all time
NCAA Division II/III single game rushing record with 730 yards rushing on 63 carries.
In 2008, the Mariners captured the Bogan Division title and hosted the Conference Championship game. Along the way, the Mariners established 23 records, including total offense (4,727), points (419), touchdowns (62), and rushing yards (4,050).
ima. The rack and bridge systems were custom-built for the weight room,
features Regulpol Aktiv 35000 flooring. The cardio room features a ninepiece, selectorized strength circuit and 15 new cardio machines manufactured by Landice and Centurion. The treadmills and ellipticals feature 26
programs including Navy, Marine and firefighter fitness tests.
The weight room and fitness center received a much-need remodel in the summer of 2013.
The training concept for the weight room was developed by Drexel University Strength and Conditioning Coach, Mike Rankin, the 2007 National
Strength Coaches Associations Professional of the Year. The six-rack,
four-bridge concept allows the Mariners athletic teams to conduct efficient
workouts for 24 to 36 athletes simultaneously, while still meeting the demands of the Academys staff and students not involved in varsity athletics.
The floor plan is open down the center with platforms cut into the floor,
allowing additional open space for various training activities.
Both rooms received fresh paint and upgrades to the audio/video systems.
Athletics provided 75 percent of the cost of the equipment, including 100
percent of the cost of the weight room through funds raised in the Annual
Mariner Classic Golf Tournaments in Texas and Maine. The Student Life
Department, taking advantage of Pepsis generosity, picked up 25 percent
of the projects cost, covering over half of the equipment expenses in the
cardio room. Public Works took on the cost of flooring, and aided in the
selection of equipment.
Ritchie Field
Ritchie Field has been the home of
the Mariners since intercollegiate
play began back in the 1940s.
It was a grass, dust and mud surface until 1993, when a $600,000
gift from Waterville philanthropist,
Harold Alfond, covered half of the
expense necessary for the installation of a KonyGreen 9009 turf
system. The old, carpet-style turf,
was the first of its kind in Northern
New England. In 2005, the field was
upgraded to the current 125-by-80
yard polypropylene fiber and rubber
infill system.
2
The past six seasons, the Mariners have compiled an impressive 42-14 (.750 winning
percentage) regular season record playing in the NEFC (largest conference in the nation), a trip to the NCAA Championships, New England Football Conference Championship in 2009, Bogan Division titles in 2008, 2009 and 2010, and two trips to the ECAC
Bowl Championship in 2005 and 2010.
A native of Dover, N.H., McKenney is an inductee in the Dover Sports Hall of Fame. He
earned his Bachelors degree in Physical Education in 1984, and his Masters degree in
Athletic Administration in 1986 at Springfield College. He was a three-year starter and a
four-year letter winner at linebacker.
McKenneys coaching career began at his alma mater in 1984 as a graduate assistant.
McKenney then went on to coaching stints at Northeastern University as Special Teams
Coordinator and D-line coach, and at Norwich University where he served as Defensive
Line Coach and Head Track Coach. McKenney returned to his alma mater in 1991 as
the Offensive Coordinator and assistant professor in physical education. Under the
direction of McKenney, Springfield became the premier running attack in NCAA Division
III. Springfields offense became the
first ever to compile 4,000 yards rushing in one season, setting an NCAA
McKenney AT A GLANCE
record with 4,275 yards. In 2000,
the Pride recorded the most wins in
Most victorious coach in Academy history
First MMA Coach to 50 wins; recorded 50th win
school history and a trip to the final
in 2011 season opener
eight of the NCAA Tournament, the
furthest for any New England school.
Coached MMA to first NCAA Division III
During McKenneys ten years at Springfield College, the offense set numerous school and
Championship Playoff appearance
conference records. His players received many individual honors such as All-Conference, AllAmerica, Player of the Year, and Academic All-America.
Coached Mariners to three postseason berths
Players are attracted to Maine Maritime Academy by its academic reputation, job placement
record and salaries, McKenney explained. We are excited about our our new weight room
and fitness center that was installed in the summer of 2013. That along with Ritchie Field,
which was renovated in 2005, provides us great facilities for our athletes.
Our program has achieved measurable success in the past several years, including NCAA
playoffs, seven Admirals Cups, three division titles and a conference championship. We look
to build on that sucess in the coming years.

Ryan Paquette
Paquette begins his second season as Maine
Maritimes Defensive Coordinator.
He served as outside linebackers coach during
his first two seasons at Salve Regina before
switching to the defensive line in 2009. He
coached the teams linebackers 2010, producing All-American and Academic All-American
linebacker, A.J. Albert. The Seahawks defense
was tied for fifth in the nation among schools at
all three divisions in turnover margin (+1.82).
In 2010, he saw two of his players John Fall
and Shane Lange earn All-New England Football Conference honors. A New England Football
Writers Division II/III All-New England Team
selection, Lange led the NEFC and set an SRU
single-season school-record 12.5 sacks, which
placed him fourth in Division III.
As a team, the 2010 Seahawks defense was
the only team in the NEFC to allow less than
100 yards rushing/game (94.3) while posting a league-best +14 in turnover margin. The
Seahawks also sacked opposing signal-callers a
league-high 34 times, which was nine more than
its closest competitor. Nationally, the Seahawks
ranked first in red zone defense, third in scoring defense (11.00 ppg allowed), fourth in total
defense (227.5 ypg allowed), ninth in turnover
margin (+14), 10th in pass efficiency defense,
and 12th in sacks (33.0).
A 2007 graduate of Endicott College with a
degree in sports management, Paquette was
a three-year letterwinner on the Gulls football
team. He joined the Salve Regina staff after
working as the assistant coach at The Pingree
School in South Hamilton, Mass. He has also
worked in the Newport (R.I.) Public School
System.
Adam Sherman
Sherman is set for his third fall on the football
sidelines in Castine. He is also Maine Maritime
Academys Head Lacrosse Coach. Sherman
mentors the offensive line, a position he spent
four seasons playing at Springfield College.
Sherman is a student of the triple-option, which
he worked into the offense at Souhegan High
School (Amherst, N.H.), where he spent two
seasons as a varsity assistant.
A four-year letterwinner in football at Springfield,
Sherman earned a degree in Communications in
2008. He began his coaching career at Souhegan High School in 2007 before making the jump
to the college game in 2011.
