Varsity
team
hits the
diamond
By KYLE SULLENDER
Special to The Sun
On Monday, April 2, the
Cherry Hill West Lions varsity
baseball team hit the road to
face Eastern High School.
Starting on the mound for the
Lions was junior Brad
Machinski.
The Lions saw a tough road
opponent and fell, 15-1, after
trailing early in the game.
The Lions got their first
hard loss out of the way early
on in the season and were
forced to regroup quickly, and
prepare both mentally and
physically for the visiting
Camden Academy Charter
High School on Wednesday,
April 4.
At 68 degrees, the field was
cool and the sky was clear,
inviting a perfect afternoon for
baseball.
Andrew Fisher started the
game for West and did so in an
impressive fashion, mowing
down the first three batters
without skipping a beat, the
first two with strikeouts, (one
looking, and one swinging)
and ended the top of the first
with a groundout to Alex Inja-
ian at first.
This was the last batter
Fisher threw to.
Club offers refuge to members
By MELISSA DIPENTO
The Cherry Hill Sun
To some, the Carman Tillelli
Community Center may just look
like a gathering place in Cherry
Hill.
But on Tuesdays and Fridays
during the afternoon, the brick
faade and cozy yellow walls
mean a whole lot more to a group
of 80 or so retired men.
Eight hours here a week its
a Godsend to me, said Mark
Markos, a past president of the
Cherry Hill Retired Mens Club.
The World War II veteran ap-
pears as if he just retired, yet the
90-year-old, who joined the club
1988, says he has both a cell phone
and a tablet computer, as he
slouches back into his folding
chair to play another round of
pinochle.
The community center, accord-
ing to township folklore, was built
by another mens club in the
1950s, Markos said. When the club
couldnt pay to upkeep the build-
ing, they gave it to the township.
And since then, Markos added,
the township has treated its sen-
ior citizens well.
The group includes a range of
people; most are from Cherry
Hill, although members dont
have to be residents to join.
The only requirement is that
members are retired.
How long one has been retired
doesnt quite matter, either.
Take Henry Bourgeois, who
joined the club six years ago.
Bourgeois, 98, enjoys playing
card games twice a week with his
friends in the club, who he says,
keep him young.
Aside from the pinochle and
bridge tables and the occasional
shuffleboard match on any
given day, the senior citizens are
treated to the tunes from yester-
year, as queued up by Larry Lei-
MELISSA DIPENTO/The Cherry Hill Sun
From left, Michael Vilenti, 76, enjoys a round of pinochle with Mark Markos, 90, Raymond Nobile, 65, and Steve Pribula, 90. The group meets
every Tuesday and Thursday at the Retired Mens Club meeting held at the Community Center in Cherry Hill.

Cherry Hill High School Easts
robotics teams have a lot to be
proud of.
Over the course of the VEX ro-
botics competitions that were
held throughout New Jersey from
November through March, the
combined wins for all three of
East's robotics teams include four
tournament champion awards,
two excellence awards, one
judges award and one build
award.
The excitement surrounding
the success of the club has made
it possible to launch a fourth
team, Droid (2616D), just in time
to have one more team represent
East at the NJ VEX State Champi-
onship in East Brunswick.
The program that started with
just two students has grown to an
after school club with more than
25 members.
In what could be described as
an epic battle, Black Tie Robotics
(2616B) brought home the title NJ
VEX State Champion on March 3.
The winning (blue) alliance was
comprised of Alliance Captain
Team 677 (Montclair), Team 169D
(Haverford, Pa.) and Team 2616B
(Cherry Hill East).
It was a tough battle to the fin-
ish in a best out of three match.
Black Tie Robotics alliance had
to unseat the opposing (red) al-
liance that included fellow East
team, Army of Two (2616), which
held the title for the past two
years.
With the first match going to
the blue alliance by a single point,
and the second match going to the
red alliance by a single point, the
final match was indeed very ex-
citing to watch. The win speaks
well for the continued success of
robotics at East, since Black Tie
Robotics will be taking on the
mantle of leadership upon gradu-
ation of the club founders, Aaron
Sirken and Brendon Rush aka
the Army of Two.
The Army of Two was recog-
nized by the state championship
judges with the build award
which is given to a team that has
built a well-crafted and construct-
ed robot that also has a profes-
sional feel and quality look to
them, with clear attention to de-
tail in construction, efficient use
of mechanical and electronic
components and reliability on the
competition field.
This is especially meaningful
and high praise for the two sen-
iors who will both be pursuing de-
grees in mechanical engineering.
Calcifer, (2616C), was selected
to be on the third-seed alliance
and successfully battled all the
way to the semi-final position be-
fore being eliminated. Just the
week before, at the Feb. 25 tourna-
ment in Tinton Falls, Calcifer was
on the winning alliance (with the
Army of Two) and earned the
tournament champion award,
qualifying them for the national
championship (which conflicts
with the senior class trip). At sev-
eral competitions, judges have
been very impressed by the quali-
ty of the engineering notebook
and interview skills of Calcifers
members.
The rookie team, Droid
(2616D), made an outstanding
debut, winning several matches,
despite having only finished the
robot the day before. All three
teams, 2616, 2616B and 2616C, ex-
hibited incredible teamwork and
school spirit in helping to get the
fledgling team ready in time to
enter the final local tournament
of the season. All of the students
are grateful to Joseph Dilks for of-
fering a lot of extended club time
every day for the past several
weeks, especially since he had to
provide this extra coverage by
himself during the maternity
leave of his co-adviser, Bethany
Lau.
Even though local tourna-
ments have concluded, Cherry
Hill East robotics teams are not
done for the season.
The Army of Two (2616) and
Black Tie Robotics (2616B) teams
have earned two of the seven
spots that will represent New Jer-
sey at the VEX Robotics World
Championship to be held April 19-
21 in Anaheim, Calif.
This 320-team competition in-
cludes top teams from America,
Canada, China, Japan, Malaysia,
Brazil, Puerto Rico, Mexico and
New Zealand.

Wests day started with a lead-
off walk then quickly got a jump-
start when two-hole hitter Danny
OSullivan hit a ball into deep
right-center and brought home
two runs with an inside the park
home run.
From there it was only a mat-
ter of how long West hitters could
keep it up; they would go on to
score eight runs in the first in-
ning off six hits and three walks.
Thanks to the first inning of-
fensive display the Lions put on,
they saw the opportunity to re-
move Fisher and presumably
save his stamina for their next
game against division opponent
Shawnee High School.
This gave junior Will Allen an
opportunity to take the mound
for the first time in the early sea-
son. Like Fisher, Allen struck out
the first two batters he faced.
The offense continued to match
up well against the four Camden
pitchers they saw, scoring an av-
erage of just over seven runs an
inning and scoring 29 in their
four chances at the plate.
Allen continued to have an im-
pressive day, throwing three in-
nings and mowing down Camden
batters with seven strikeouts and
only one hit allowed.
I just felt really good today,
Allen said. I had really good
command, and everything was
working.
He wasnt the only one who felt
this way.
Camden would finish the game
with only one hit, and 11 Ks in 18
at-bats.
The game would be called after
four and a half innings when the
minimum for the 10-run mercy
rule took effect.
It helped. It was a good turn
around for the team, Allen said.
And now we play another big
game against Shawnee, and were
feeling good.

Cherry Hill continues to explore av-
enues to expand opportunities for our resi-
dents to stay informed about whats hap-
pening in the township. Whether it is uti-
lizing traditional media or embarking on
new opportunities to communicate, our
goal is to ensure that everyone has the op-
portunity to be aware of and participate in
everything the township has to offer. I
wanted to take a moment and update you
on the options for obtaining news, events
and important information about what is
going on in Cherry Hill.
The township recently unveiled its new
website, which serves as a virtual town
hall for residents to obtain information
easily and conveniently. The new site en-
ables visitors to customize the information
they see based on their interests through
the My Dashboard feature. We have also
expanded our Events Calendar for resi-
dents to keep track of what is going on
across our community. The notify me
feature on the new website allows visitors
to sign-up to receive calendar and event up-
dates sent directly to them by email.
Each week, I prepare a column provid-
ing information about the work we are
doing on behalf of the residents in Cherry
Hill. That column is distributed in several
local publications, including The Cherry
Hill Sun. It is also
posted on the
township website.
My column is also
shared in the
mayors weekly
email, which is a
compilation of
news, informa-
tion, and events
distributed by my
office every Friday
to update resi-
dents on recent
news and upcoming activities happening
around town. Residents can sign-up to re-
ceive the weekly email in the notify me
section of the new website.
Cherry Hill has also begun sharing serv-
ices and utilizing Camden County's Re-
verse 9-1-1 Community Notification Sys-
tem as an additional tool to alert residents
of important and significant township
messages. The system will be used for im-
portant township alerts only, including but
not limited to emergency evacuations,
missing person alerts, natural disaster
alerts, hazardous material leaks, search
and rescue operations, crime prevention,
neighborhood emergency incidents, spe-
cial community notifications and Home-
land Security information.
The Reverse 9-1-1 system will automati-
cally place a call to residential landline
telephone numbers within a specific geo-
graphic area and will deliver the relevant
recorded message. If an answering ma-
chine or voicemail system picks up the
call, the emergency message will be left on
the machine/voicemail.
When residents get a Reverse 9-1-1 call,
they will receive specific instructions on
what to do, where to go, or how and where
to obtain additional information. Resi-
dents who would like to change the num-
ber at which they receive these alerts can
do so by visiting http://www.camdencoun-
ty.com/public-safety/emergency-notifica-
tion-form.
In addition, many of our township de-
partments now utilize Twitter and Face-
book to distribute information. You can
find the township on Twitter at @Cherry-
HillTwp, police at @CHPD, fire at @Cher-
ryHillFire, and public schools @CHPST-

in our opinion
W
hile virtually no one antici-
pates property values to
skyrocket anytime soon,
there are signs that the housing mar-
ket is beginning to get back on its feet.
Prices are up. Sales are solid. And
while foreclosures and short sales will
keep a lid on prices for some time, it
appears the market is moving in the
right direction. A report from The As-
sociated Press cited the National Asso-
ciation of Realtors point that Febru-
arys sales pace was the second high-
est since May 2010.
So what does that matter? Obviously
it matters a lot if youre buying or sell-
ing a home. But, even if youre not,
your homes value affects how you
handle your budget.
From a practical side, a higher
value might allow you to tap into your
homes equity. You might spend that
extra cash on home improvements, for
example, which helps to boost the
economy.
A homes value also has a psycho-
logical impact. Even though your
home might not be on the market,
there is a sense of security knowing
that you have your homes value to fall
back on if times get tough. That, in
turn, might prompt you to feel more
comfortable about buying new furni-
ture, taking a vacation, etc. Again, all
of these things help to spur the econo-
my.
To issue an all is well with the
housing market proclamation would
be premature. The aforementioned
distressed properties will continue to
be a burden. Credit is still tight. Inter-
est rates remain low, but could rise, sti-
fling a robust recovery.
But, hopefully, the days of watching
your homes value plummet are over,
or about over. The economy is showing
signs of growing albeit at a modest
pace. The reports indicate that more
people once again are looking at home
ownership as they feel better about
their employment status.
All of which is good news for home-
owners.
Home, sweeter home?
The numbers show that the real estate market might be stabilizing
Maybe the worst is over
Its not yet time to pronounce the
housing market as cured, but recent
reports indicate that it perhaps has
stabilized. Thats good news for both
homeowners and an economy that
continues to grow.

Elizabeth Anne Schopfer, Cher-
ry Hill High School Wests 2009
valedictorian, the daughter of
Jan and Lou Schopfer, is a junior
at the University of Pennsylva-
nia, majoring in psychology and
has just been named to the hon-
ors program in psychology at
Penn.
The program was developed to
recognize excellence in psycholo-
gy among Penn undergraduates
and to enhance skills related to
psychological research. There are
two primary components to the
program: a substantial, inde-
pendent-research project and a
complementary honors seminar.
Students are selected to be part of
the program in the spring of
their junior year.
Upon successful completion of
all requirements, and upon grad-
uation, the student will be award-
ed a degree in psychology with
honors.
Elizabeth, a Mulroney Scholar
in autism, will be studying under
Dr. David Mandell at the Center
for Autism Research.
CARs research is based on the
belief that better treatments for
the autism spectrum disorders
(ASDs) will follow from a better
understanding of the causal
mechanisms. Elizabeth currently
works as a sleep research assis-
tant under Dr. Michael Grandner
(www.michaelgrandner.com) at
the Center for Sleep and Respira-
tory Neurobiology at the Univer-
sity of Pennsylvanias Sleep Cen-
ter.
She will present her research
again this summer in Boston at
SLEEP 2012.
tion is posted to keep residents in-
formed in a timely manner.
We also just recently launched
a citizens cabinet to further en-
gage our residents and involve
them in the decision making
process for our township. The
cabinet will provide additional
opportunities for dialogue and
discussion about our township.
Along with the citizens cabi-
net, we have also recently an-
nounced the creation of a busi-
ness council to increase the dia-
logue and enhance our partner-
ships with township businesses.
The council will serve as an incu-
bator, providing a forum for busi-
ness leaders to share their opin-
ions, concerns and suggestions
about how the township can pro-
vide better support and assis-
tance.
Space on the council is limited
and the deadline for submitting
your information to business-
council@chtownship.com for con-
sideration is April 30.
These are some of the many
ways through which our resi-
dents can keep up to date with the
goings on around Cherry Hill. It
is important to know that while
this is how we are sending infor-
mation out.
Communication, however, is a
two-way street and we hope and
encourage our residents and busi-
nesses to email, call or stop by
town hall to communicate with
all of us here. I know I speak for
everyone here at town hall when I
say we look forward to hearing
from you and will continue to
look for ways to make sure you
are able to hear us.

bowitz, who has been with the
club since 2001.
He didnt always enjoy spin-
ning tunes, but picked up the
trade as a hobby when he joined
the group more than 10 years ago.
As Leibowitz sat down to chat,
he began detailing his familys
roots about his life growing up
in Brooklyn and attending the
New York School for the Hard of
Hearing, his move to Cherry Hill
to work at the Philadelphia Naval
Yard, to his life now, which he fills
with tending to his vegetable gar-
den, making model ships and vol-
unteering with the Special
Olympics.
He said the retired mens club,
though, is his place of refuge.
Its about getting away from
the house because nobody is
home, Liebowitz said.
The card games and shuffle-
board matches fill the time, but
many members of the club say
the conversations had and friend-
ships formed are what keep them
coming back year after year.
Groups of men relive their
memories from World War II as if
it were yesterday.
And many of the men said its
comforting to be able to share
their own experiences with some-
one else who knows what they
went through.
We never talk about women,
joked Charlie Laible, who cele-
brated his 85th birthday last
week. We share stories and talk
about the past, especially about
being in the service. Its a social
thing. Theyre very nice people.
But sometimes the conversa-
tion is much more lighthearted,
members said.
The men share tips with each
other, especially when it comes to
saving money or applying for a
tax credit or rebate.
Members also talk about their
health from time to time, consult-
ing friends in the group along the
way for advice and support.
Current events and politics are
also hot topics at the card table on
a regular basis. Joking and laugh-
ter are always par for the course.
We always talk about some-
thing different, Laible said. Its
a very hospitable place to come
to.
The club meets Tuesdays and
Fridays from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
at the Community Center, 820
Mercer St.
Coffee and tea are available for
25 cents each, with the proceeds
going to subsidize lunches held
occasionally at the club and out
on the town.
Interested men can call mem-
bership chairman Gene Wonder-
lin at 663-6398 for more informa-
tion or to join the club.
Dues are $10 a year; Markos
said the $10 fee will be waived for
the first year for prospective
members who mention this arti-
cle in when joining.
