The Introduction

Now that you have gathered all your research, we are going to analyze your introduction.

Task: Revise your topic proposal and submit the new introduction with the old topic proposal.
You will be able to create a meaningful introduction to your paper.

A. The topic and why it is interesting
a. How do you hook in your readers?
i. historical review- a little about the past
ii. anecdotal a story
iii. surprising statement- something shocking, joyful, etc.
iv. declarative- straight forward.
B. The Thesis Statement
a. Your thesis statement should be specificit should cover only what you will discuss in your paper and
should be supported with specific evidence.
b. It can be adjusted.
c. Different kinds:
i. An analytical paper breaks down an issue or an idea into its component parts, evaluates the issue or
idea, and presents this breakdown and evaluation to the audience.
ii. An expository (explanatory) paper explains something to the audience.
iii. An argumentative paper makes a claim about a topic and justifies this claim with specific evidence.
The claim could be an opinion, a policy proposal, an evaluation, a cause-and-effect statement, or an
interpretation. The goal of the argumentative paper is to convince the audience that the claim is
true based on the evidence provided.

1. Do not question, tell!
a. Ex. Why are we destroying the rainforest? That is what will be discussed.
2. Be clear. Reread your work.
3. Do not use I. Your opinion can be in your paper without the use of I.
4. Know your their, theyre, and there.
5. Know your its and its.
6. Know your too, to, and two.
