Compose an argumentative essay.

Objectives
● Understand the concept of an Argumentative Essay through
different activities;
● Write an outline of the argumentative essay and use it in
presenting the final draft; and
● Construct a well-written argumentative essay.

Let’s Understand
Activity 1. Think back to the last argument that you had with your
family member/s specifically this time of Covid-19 pandemic.
Recall the words that you used. Did you get disappointed, upset, frustrated?
Did you resolve the issue? What did you do to end the argument? Lay out
and create your comic strip, make it more attractive and presentable.
Follow up Questions:
1. How did the conversation start? How did it end?

2. Did you present evidence, experts’ opinions, facts, or information to win


the conversation?
The vital purpose of writing an argumentative essay is to change people’s
points of view or persuade them to accept new points of view. In writing an
argumentative essay, you must present and investigate an issue with enough
and valid evidence.

Here are some ways on how to write an argumentative essay:


1. Pre-writing
a) Create a clear, firm, and debatable topic.
b) Study your topic well. Choose your stance.
c) Collect your information, sets of evidence, facts, experts’
opinions, statistics, examples, testimony from authorities, and

articles from reliable sources to support and strengthen your
argument.

d) Check the background of your readers or audience as well as


their knowledge, opinion, and beliefs.

2. Drafting
a) Consider the different forms of argument (Traditional and
Rogerian) in writing an argumentative essay.

b) Create an outline.

a) Evaluate the purpose of your essay and check the style, clarity,
and presented evidence.
b) Edit your essay. Check spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
c) Read your essay.
d) Final draft.

5. Publish your essay


The claim could be an opinion, a policy proposal, an evaluation, a cause-
and-effect statement, or an interpretation.

The thesis statement is the main point, idea, or the central message. It is the
sentence that identifies the topic being discussed and it is used to generate
interest in your topic and encourage the readers or the audience.

There are five types of argument claims:


1. Fact- the statement is true and correct
2. Definition- the dictionary defines of what you are arguing plus your
own interpretation
3. Value- the importance of what you are arguing
4. Cause and effect- what causes the problem in your essay and what
effects it has
5. Policy- why the reader should care and what they should do about it
after reading

Three types of Argument


1. Classical. It is also called Aristotelian and the most popular strategy
for making an argument. In classical argument, present the main
argument, state your opinion, and do your best to convince the
reader why your stance is the right one. It is simple and effective
when the readers do not have lot of information about your topic as
it outlines the facts clearly and concisely.
2. Rogerian. This type of argument is effective for polarizing the topic, as
it acknowledges both sides and presents the middle ground. The flow
of Rogerian argument is presenting the problem, acknowledging the
opposing side of the argument, stating your point of view, and
explaining why yours is the most beneficial to the audience.

3. Toulmin. This type of argument is effective for modifying topics but
rather than present both sides, it presents one, hinging particularly on
facts presented in a way that makes the claim difficult to argue with.
In here, you must present your claim, present grounds to support the
claim, and then justify that the grounds are linked to the claim.

There are three argument appeals: ethos, logos, and pathos.


a) Ethos- ethical appeal of the writer, trustworthiness, and
credibility
b) Logos- logical appeal of the writer, logical reasoning, and
information
c.) Pathos- emotional appeal of the writer, passion, higher and
base emotion

Situation: You have been asked by your teacher to be the school


representative in an essay writing competition. The argumentative essay is
about COVID 19 Pandemic. As you prepare for the contest day, you will
present this prepared argumentative essay to a selected audience of
yours.
