All Bag & Board Drill (double-wing wishbone blocking)


Purpose To develop proper wishbone blocking technique and develop a Finish It Off attitude

Procedure You need up to 5 boards and 5 bags
Have plaers hold the bags in front of the!" with their feet shoulder width
apart and the botto! of the bag on the ground# These are the $%#
%ine up the boards directl behind the $%" then have the sa!e nu!ber of
offensive plaers line up across fro! the bags" & ards awa#
Offense gets in a good '(point stance" and fire off in a double(wing blocking
technique and drives the bag beond the end of the board using drive steps
The $% should offer !ild to !oderate resistance
The coach should check for a good stance throughout the drill" and ensure
that the bag pops up on contact )*$ is driven back at the sa!e ti!e
All Bird Dog Drill
Purpose To go over blocking assign!ents and proper first step

Procedure +et up ,, cones or plaers in a defense our opponent will pla
%ine up the offense to e-ecute a pla and on the ./ cadence" the onl take
the first step on their assign!ent#
The hold that position until the coaches check the!# This allows ou check
each plaer to ensure the understand their blocking assign!ents and first
step#

Purpose To go over blocking assign!ents#

Procedure +et up ,, cones or plaers into a 1(1" 5(& or 2(' defense

knee#
On the snap" each offensive plaer points to who! he is blocking" or points
to where he is going

Procedure %ine up a defender facing the ball carrier about 5 ards apart#
7ut a cone about ' ards to the right and left of the linebacker and have the
running back attack the inside of the cone#
$efender should !ake the tackle on the running back with his head in front
and hit with his inside shoulder# He should !ake contact with his shoulder
at the hip of the ball carrier and run his feet through on contact#
8ake sure the defender is wrapping his ar!s around the ball carrier# 0epeat

7rocedure3 You need , or !ore heav bags and ' cones set up in a triangle as shown

The ball carriers will carr the shield and on the snap" will run in a diagonal
line towards the third cone#

One row of plaers will hold the bags" with their ar!s e-tended

On the snap" the blocker attacks the defender# The defender should take on

On the second whistle" the ball carrier runs directl towards one of the
cones#
)t that point" the defender should shed the blocker in the opposite direction"

7urpose3 To develop quick and proper footwork" to sta balanced while avoiding obstacles
and proper tacking technique

7rocedure3 +et up at least three shields or heav bags on the ground in a line" each

%ine up one plaer as the defender at the end of the line" and a coach ;or
another plaer= at the other end of the line with a bag
The defender can either face forward and shuffle over the bags on the
ground" or he can face the bags and high step over the bags on the ground
On the snap" the defender !akes his wa over each bag" gets in good
position" and tackles the bag at the end of the line#

the line instead of a heav bag

defender
On the snap" the ball carrier runs towards the cone" and the defender will
perfor! the sa!e side steps over the bags" and !ake the tackle before the
ball

Purpose Teaches proper for! and hitting position#

Procedure %ine up three agilit bags about ' ards apart# Have the defender line up on
the end of one bag and the ball carrier on the opposite side of the bag#
On coaches cadence the ball carrier will run with his shoulders
perpendicular to the line of scri!!age and attack one of the three holes#
The defender !ust shuffle until the back has co!!itted and then attack the
hole and wrap up the ball carrier and run through contact#
The defender should reverse the !o!entu! of the ball carrier and cause
hi! to go backwards#

7urpose3 To develop proper tackling technique when the ball carrier has !ade a !ove to the
side ;cutting awa fro!= of the defender#

7rocedure3 %ine up two plaers" both facing the sa!e direction
One plaer will be holding a heav bag# The bag represents the ball carrier#
The other plaer is the defender#
The defender is offset fro! and about one ard behind the ball carrier
On the snap" the ball carrier will back peddle" dragging the bag with hi!#
)s the bag is dragged past the defender" the defender should dive
sidewas at the bag" ai!ing to put his chest into the bod of the bag# )s
contact is !ade" the defender should wrap and roll#
The defender 8A+T get his upper bod into the bag" as ar! tackles often
fail# )lso" when rolling the bag to the ground" the defender wants to roll his
bod over the top of the bag" twisting the bag to the ground#

7urpose3 To develop an aggressive attitude and the abilit to recover fro! a blow and !ake
the tackle quickl#

7rocedure3 +et up 1 plaers ;two with shields" one with a heav bag= and the coach ;or
another plaer= about & to ,9 ards behind the plaer holding the bag#
One plaer is the defender" the two holding the shields are offensive
blockers" and the heav bag is the ball carrier#
On the snap" the defender heads towards the first shield and delivers a
blow" tring to knock the blocker back and off his feet# His head should be in
front" and proper for! !ust be !aintained#
)fter contacting the first shield" he sheds" then heads towards the second
shield and delivers another blow
Once e clears the second shield" he gets into good tackling position and
tackles the heav bag# The bag should be wrapped and lifted properl"
driven backwards and the defender should land on the bag
)s soon as the tackle is !ade" the coach drops or bounces the football on
the ground# The tackler !ust get up and recover the fu!ble#

straight path at the defensive plaer who !ust e-ecute a good for! tackle#
Boaches should !ake sure that proper technique and for! is used in this
tackling drill#
All - /achine 0un Drill
7urpose3 To teach proper foot work" to shed a block" then !ake a tackle

7rocedure3 7lace one tackler on one line" ,9(,5 ards fro! the re!aining plaers" who
are lined up single file< the last plaer in line carries a football#
On the whistle" the first plaer in line sprints to the tackler and !akes
contact#
Tackler gets set" absorbs the hit" and then sheds the block#
)s soon as the first plaer !akes contact" the second plaer in line starts
sprinting towards the tackler#
The tackler !ust shed the first block" re(establish good position" and then
shed the second block#
This continues until the last plaer" who! the tackler !ust !eet" and bring
to the ground#
Boach should look for good for! here ;head up" wrap ar!s" get low" etc#=

7urpose3 To teach proper foot work and proper position when trailing a ball carrier#

7rocedure3 +tart with two plaers and four cones
The first ,9(,5 ards" the offensive plaer can sprint and 6og" but !ust do
both in this span
$uring the first ,95,5 ards" the defender will trail b one ard# He !ust
shuffle when the O7 6ogs" and shuttle when the O7 sprints# He !ust be
able to stop and break down at an ti!e" so keep good for!
$uring the second ,9(,5 ards" the O7 !ust sta behind the %O+ but is free
to stiff ar!" spin" 6uke" or whatever# Dach ti!e he !akes a !ove" the $7
!ust fit into hi! in good for!#
The O7 !ust then run through the last two cones" and the $7 !ust !ake a
good for! tackle
All - Pad Drill
7urpose3 To review a pla using contact wCshields and bags to develop ti!ing and
coordination in the offense# 12uipment3 ' to 5 bags and 1 to 5 shields along with
cones for the backside#

7rocedure3 The coach sets up a defense using plaers and cones on the defense#
)ll interior tackles will have blocking bags ;/= and all pla side defenders
that don>t have bags will have shields#
)n plaer that does not have direct contact in the pla can be replaced b a
cone or 6ust stand there with out a pad#
The defense does not !ove their 6ob is to provide !oderate resistance
when being blocked#
The coach sets up using the !ost co!!on defenses faced or the upco!ing
opponent>s defense#
The offense lines up and e-ecutes a pla at full speed# You should have a
coach for the pla side blocks" backside blocks" and the backs e-ecuting the
pla or !isdirection# This allows ou check each pla and plaer to ensure
the understand their assign!ents and are e-ecuting the! correctl# You
can rep one pla to either sides" or a set of plas to one or both sides# You
can rep the line onl as well#
All - Pursuit Drill
7urpose3 Teaches defensive personnel proper pursuit angles and provides conditioning#

7rocedure3 The defense huddles on a selected line of scri!!age#
)lign two cones" one on each side of the field on top of the nu!bers#
7osition a running back on each hash !ark" five ards behind the selected
line of scri!!age#
The coach calls out the defensive pla# The defense lines up accordingl in
proper stance and align!ents# On the cadence" the coach either drops
straight back and throws the ball deep or turns and si!ulates a toss sweep#
If the coach drops straight back" the defensive line rushes and the
secondar and linebackers drop to respective :ones# The coach throws the
ball deep" and the defender intercepts the football at its highest point and
returns it up the near sideline# The re!aining defenders set up a wall
leading the ball carrier into the end :one#
If the coach si!ulates a toss sweep" the ball carrier on the hash !ark sprints
around the cone and down the sidelines#

7urpose3 Teaches plaers the protective value of their shoulder pads and to build confidence
in hitting due to that protection#

7rocedure3 $ivide plaers into two lines" facing each other" on all fours" about , ard apart# On
the snap" the plaers will spring at each other !aking contact shoulder pad to
shoulder pad" tring to bu!p the other plaer back#
All -wo Bags Down-block Drill
7urpose3 To develop a good down block technique

7rocedure3 You need four plaers" two cones and two bags or shields
%ine up the cones in a hori:ontal line about five ards apart
%ine up two defenders" each with a bagCshield directl outside the cones
%ine up the offensive plaers about one ard awa fro!" and one ard to the
outside of the defender
On the snap" the offensive plaers take an open step ;a short side(step
with toes pointed at about 15 degrees= with the foot nearest the bag
The offensive plaer should drive the bag towards the coach and past the
cones#
All -wo Bags Down-block Double -eam Drill
7urpose3 To develop a good double(tea! down block technique

7rocedure3 You need si- plaers" two cones and two bags or shields
%ine up the cones in a hori:ontal line about five ards apart
%ine up two defenders" each with a bagCshield directl outside the cones
%ine up the offensive plaers about one ard awa fro! the defender
The head(up blocker is called the seal !an" and his 6ob is to seal the
defender fro! getting to the %O+#
The outside blocker is called the post !an" and his 6ob is to drive the
defender off the %O+ and into the second level" putting an obstacle in front
of the backside linebacker#
On the snap" the seal !an takes a drive step" keeping his head to the
I*+I$D ;the side nearest the cone=" otherwise he risks getting hit in the head
b the post !an#
The post !an takes an open step ;a short side(step with toes pointed at
about 15 degrees= with the foot nearest the defender
The offensive plaer should drive the bag towards the coach and past the
cones#
All -wo Bags 4-block Drill
7urpose3 To develop a good E blocking technique

7rocedure3 You need four plaers" two cones and two bags or shields
%ine up the cones in a hori:ontal line about two ards apart
%ine up two defenders" each with a bagCshield directl inside the cones#
The can line up head(up or shaded to one side of the offensive plaers or
the other#
%ine up the offensive plaers across fro! the defenders
Boach designates one of the offensive plaers as the inside blocker" and
the other as the outside blocker
On the snap" the outside blocker down blocks the defender lined up on the
inside blocker b taking an open step ;a short side(step with toes pointed
at about 15 degrees= with the foot nearest the defender
)t the sa!e ti!e" the inside blocker takes a drop step ;a short" slightl
backwards step" where our toes are pointed at a 15 degree angle=" allowing
the outside blocker to step in front of hi!" then he continues and carries out
a down block on the defender who lined up across fro! the outside blocker#

7urpose3 To develop tea!(building in s!all groups" with a controlled environ!ent for tackling"
blocking" and ball carrier and pursuit skills#

7rocedure3 Ase cones to !ark off a 5(ard wide b ,9(ard long field#
You need three O%" one ./ ;a coach can pla ./= and one 0/ on offense#
On defense" ou need two )(gap $%" two /(gap I%/ ;plaing 1(ards off
%O+=" and one + ;plaing F(ards off %O+=#
The offense gets four tries to score" getting one point each ti!e# )fter four
tries" the two sides switch# The O% can block anwa the want" using drive
blocks" double tea!s" pulling" etc#

Purpose Bonditioning

Procedure +et up a course of alternating plons ;one on the left" one on the right= so
plaers have to !ove to the outside of the cones# The course should be
between G and ,9 ards long#
4ith the plons set up in an alternating fashion" a plaer gets down on all
fours" but instead of on the knees" the plaer is on his hand and feet# The
behind should be raised and the knees or elbows should never touch the
ground#
The plaer will navigate the course in this fashion to the end and back#
0esult 5 7laers will often get knocked down during a ga!e" or blocked" and
the have to get back up# You will often notice that a plaer will naturall get
into this tpe of stance fro! a four(point stance on the defensive line#

Once each of the sprint groups arrive back to their original corner" the
begin doing push(ups while the other two groups run
