Assignment 2 Resource

Teacher Notes

All the activities from Assignment 1 and accompanying props and teaching aides
I created are based on the childrens picture book Peggy by Anna Walker.

Resources for Activity 1
This activity requires the children to complete a character profile table of one of
the characters from the story. They will be given a handout with a template on it
including the following headings to fill out: physical characteristics/appearance,
behaviour, how the character is involved in the story, and what the character is
trying to do/goals. In addition to this task, they will also create their chosen
character they picked from the story for their character profile and something
associated with that character with the craft materials provided such as,
coloured paper, felt, feathers, pipe cleaners etc. I created Peggy the chicken and a
sunflower, which reminded her of home. These props can be shown to the
children after the teacher has explained the activity to model to them an example
of how to do it and how it relates back to the activity in order to understand the
connection.

Resources for Activity 2
This activity involves the children using their imagination to change the ending
of the story making it as creative as possible. They will share their story endings
by reading them aloud to the rest of the class. This can be done in a variety of
ways for example, reading the story out incorporating props in the classroom or
brought from home into the storytelling, having a narrator read the story while
you act out your alternate ending of the story with props, by using a recording
app on the computer, or simply act out your alternative ending of the story with
props to enhance the storytelling experience. Some ideas of props may include
symbolic items from the story: a toy chicken or pigeon, a toy train, a flower, an
umbrella, or objects relating to their alterative story ending. The children might
like to dress up as an actual character from the story for example, the chicken

and wear a beak. I will show the children various props I have brought to class
including a fake flower and a beak mask template to give them ideas for their
oral presentation. It also gives you the opportunity to model an example using
these props.

Resources for Activity 3
This activity requires the children to use their creative writing experiences to
create an alternative story based on the picture book, where they have to pick a
different main character and a different city for the story to be set in. After they
have written their narrative story, they will represent their narrative in a
creative way by either drawing or painting a picture of their story. They must
add a written description explaining what it represents and how it depicts their
alternative story. I created a template of how I would like this activity to be set
out with a prompt picture on it to let the children think about. This will be shown
to them as an example of something similar they can produce and kept at the
front of the classroom to refer back to.

These resources help early years children develop their literacy skills by
enhancing the storytelling experience and promote the development of literacy
learning as a whole. Props help to make each story more meaningful to the child
through tactile exploration. Students need to be surrounded by literacy practices
and products that enable them to see how literacy works, demonstrated by my
resources.
