Why is ICT significant to Health and

Physical Education?
"Technology is an integral part of life and will become
increasingly so in the future" (Franks & Wood, 1997). It
offers amazing and endless opportunities and it is only
fitting that these be integrated into the classroom,
especially in Health and Physical Education. Information
and communication technology involves numerous
tools and thousands of resources that can provide
unmatched HPE learning and opportunities. Webb
(2007) suggests that the inclusion of ICT into the
classroom enhances the quality of teaching and
learning.

Did you know?
For the past several decades, physical
educators have been implementing and using
video technology in their classes to view and
assess performances. (Barnes-Wallace,
O'Connor Creeden, Finkenberg & LaMaster,
2002)
Twitter can be an effective tool for accessing
up to date educational information, strategies,
techniques, websites, thoughts, questions,
answers and more, especially in the field of
Health and Physical Education. (K3, 2012) (See
action sheet for more information.)

What do the experts have to say?
The use of ICT in the classroom can create a powerful
learning environment. ICT provides access to an endless
supply of information using multiple resources. ICT can
also make complex processes (eg. skill development)
easier to understand. (Smeets, 2005) The use of ICT in
the classroom also develops other skills such as co-
operative learning and reflection. (Susman, 1998)
Technology can be a very useful tool but it is important
that it is used correctly. Janiu (2011) states that
effective lessons that are facilitated by the use of digital
tools should link instructional approaches and learning
outcomes to the goals of the lesson. It is important that
technology is chosen to aid teaching and learning
rather than a lesson being designed around the
available technology. It is also essential that Physical
Education teachers know how to effectively integrate
the technologies to enhance the performance and
engagement of their students. (ISV, 2013)
What should you be aware of?
When planning a HPE session that includes ICT, there
are some important considerations to be made in
organisation and management of the activity. Firstly,
iPads, computers, cameras can be very expensive
equipment, Sibley and McKethan (2012) state that
explicit plans need to be made to protect the devices,
this could include special protective gear for the device
or designated areas or containers for equipment to be
placed.
Other key points teachers should be aware of is off-task
student behaviour that is often observed with the use
of ICT. As games, websites and other distractions are so
easily accessed by students when using technology, it is
imperitive that teachers are closely monitoring student
use and similar strictness level to other off-task
behaviour is enforced. (Sibley & McKethan, 2012)
Daniel (2002) identifies the three key concerns of ICT in
education as access, quality and cost. To Daniel,
achieving the best outcomes for teachers and students
is a matter of quality, being that the "fitness for the
purpose at minimum cost to society". (Daniel, 2002).
When developing an ICT program, it is not necessary to
get the most expensive equipment, find devices that
can provide the best quality learning in all subject
areas. (Webb, 2007)

Trainer
Trainer is an online game which educates children
about dietary and fitness needs. Trainer gives students
the opportunity to discover, seek and share health
information. From playing the game, students quickly
learn about how nutrition and exercise impacts on their
daily lives. Students can also connect via webcam to
exercise with the game.
Nourish Interactive - Healthy food games for kids
Nutrition games for children that educate about the
importance of healthy foods and eating a balanced diet.
Nourish interactive is designed to cater for AusVELS
levels foundation through to 6 and includes fantastic
teacher resources.
APPS FOR SKILL DEVELOPMENT
Coach's Eye
Coach's eye is an app which allows you to record and
break down video of physical activity to enhance and
improve skills. The app can be used by teacher or
students to record and assess their performance.
Burst Mode
Similar to Coach's eye, Burst Mode enables students
and teachers to break down an action to improve skill
development. Burst mode takes 50 individual images in
a 3 second period allowing you to find and demonstrate
to students different parts of an action that they may
not see in real time.
Time Motion
Time motion allows you to record the activity profile of
a sportsperson during an event. You can use the profile
to describe the movement shown in the recording.
Great for students to analyze their own or peers
actions.
When introducing ICT into the Health and Physical Education classroom, there are some strategies, approaches and a wide
variety of resources available for you to enhance your students learning across the Health and Physical Education curriculum.
Strength based approach to teaching Health and Physical Education
A strength based approach is an approach to teaching that views
situations realistically and looks for opportunities to use and support
existing strengths, skills and capacities rather than focusing on the
negatives outcomes, problems or concerns. This separates the
problem from the student, without minimizing it. (Department of
Education and Early Childhood Development, 2012)
This approach is also known as the Salutogenic model and shifts the
focus from the negative outcomes such as disease, obesity, ill-health
and focuses on improving personal approaches to support and
enhance health and physical welfare. (Antonovsky, 1996)

FUSE
FUSE is an online initiative of the Department of
Education and Early Childhood Development. Fuse has
a multitude of online games and resources for both
teachers and students in relation to health and
nutrition.

Brain Gym
Brain gym is a program that involves carrying out specific movements
prior to learning activities. These movements can improve stability,
mobility, sensorimotor coordination, spatial and listening skills, hand-
eye coordination, whole body flexibility and more. Brain gym can be
accessed in videos on YouTube and can prepare the class for Physical
Education or other learning areas.
Nintendo Wii
Some might be surprised to hear but popular gaming console,
Nintendo Wii can have a meaningful and productive use in the Physical
Education classroom. Research has found that Wii activities can burn as
many calories as a bike ride or a run and participation in these
activities can help to prevent obesity, diabetes and heart diseases
(Murray, 2013) Wii Fit and Wii Sports can be used to enhance the
students physical fitness and for exercise. While Wii sports can be
somewhat limited in participation, Wii Fit enables all students to
engage together and partake in the activities simultaneously.
Teaching HPE
Teaching HPE is an app to assist HPE teachers with a
range of web based resources all at the touch a button.
Teaching HPE also allows teacher submissions and
feedback to widen the learning network.

PE Games
PE Games is an app designed for Physical
Education teachers that contains over 100
different games and activities for classroom use.
Games and activities can have specific learning
outcomes or skill development or can be simply
warm up activities. Full details of games are given
including the type/size area needed, equipment
and importantly the instructions. PE Games is
highly rated and available on the app store for
free.
