INTRODUCTION
AN INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY
Organizations play major role all over the world different organization
meet people needs and provides them with product, service, or both. Due to
globalization, the world has become a global village. This has very much helped
people to get their needs. Different firm play different role and has its own
importance. For my study, I have chosen erala !inerals "nd !etals #imited. It
is a well$reputed company fully owned by the %tate &overnment of erala.
The 'ompany has indulged in the manufacturing of world class Titanium
Dio(ide. It has been ran)ed among the top ten competitions in the world
producing its own product. In this study, I will be covering the organization as a
whole briefly. *ope I succeed and fulfill the study that I began with.
!!# is a world class producer of mineral sand based value added
products. In India, !!# is the only producer and distributor of rutile grade
Ti+,. The company enjoys monopoly and faces no competition in India. -ut in
foreign mar)ets, the company faces competition from a number of companies.

INDUSTRY 3RO2ILE
The world is rapidly shrin)ing with the advent of communication,
transportation and financial flows product development in one Industry are
finding enthusiastic acceptance in other industry. "s the Industry, which is
manufacturing Industry, product definitely depends on the end user Industries.
Industry plays a significant sole in every firm. Industrial development has
been given on greater importance in Indian planning on account of Industrial
development. Industry is necessary in productivity, employment, national Income
and rate of capital formation in India witnessed large scale diversification India.
:ow India occupies tenth place among the industrially developed countries
in the world.
TITANIUM DIOGIDE INDUSTRY IN INDIA
The Indian reserves of illmenite and rutile is e(pected to the around ;+
million tones. The most important sources of illmenite in India are beach sands of
south. !aharashtra, Orissa, Tamilnadu and in erala is around 23 million tones.
There are about ,+ million tones reserves in Orissa.
This information threw light in to the possibilities of new manufactures and
competitions in Titanium Dio(ide pigment Industry in the Indian !ar)et with the
increasing demand for the paints, rubber, plastic and printing in)s etc. The arrival
of new manufactures will be more in the near future. This will ultimately results in

generally )nown as 'havara coast. This deposits stretch up to a distance of /H m
along the coastal strip and having a depth of Hm. The dar) sands of Travancore

Hi(t#+ #" KMML
In the earliest periods of /Ath century, precisely in /A+A a &erman
scientist named !r. %chaumberg happened to discover traces of I/lmanite and
monazite in the blac) beach sands of 'havara coast in the erala state of India.
%chaumberg who was then wor)ing for an ?nglish firm got the sand e(ported to
?ngland. "t that time there was great demand for monazite because of its wide
application in the mantle ma)ing of gas lights. 'ontinued efforts of &erman led to
the discovery of other minerals such as >utile, Iircon, %ilmanite etc in large
volume in the sand of 'havara coast between :eenda)ara and ayam)ulam.. The
discovery of monazite was 1uite accidental. ?venthough the &erman laid
foundation for a mineral separation plant at 'havara its activities were curtained
by Eorld Ear ,.
The first full fledged mineral separation plant in 'havara was established
by a private entrepreneur in /A., as F. C. 7ereira and %ons =Travancore0 7vt.
#td. They were involved in mining and separating mineral sands into various
constituents li)e Illmanite, !onazite, >utile, Iircon, #euco(ene etc. During /A3;
this concern was ta)en over by the state government and was placed under the
control of its industries department. The unit was converted as a limited company
with effect from /.2./AJ, in the name of 9The erala !inerals and !etals #td9.
Initially the company had only one unit )nown as 5!ineral %eparation
7lant5. In /AJ2 the company received intent for the production of Titanium
dio(ide =Ti+,0 pigment using 'hloride process. In /AJ; !!# registered its ,nd
unit )nown as Titanium dio(ide 7igment 7lant. Its construction started only in
/AJA and total capital cost was >s./22 'rores. The plant was commissioned in
December /AH2. !!# became the first and only Integrated Titanium dio(ide
plant in the world.
?ven though !!# was commissioned in /AH2 it was not able to operate
efficiently due to technical problems. Due to these problems the company has to
suffer an accumulated loss of more than the capital investment over a period of H
years.
In the above circumstances it was in /AA/ that the entire personnel of
!!# from top management to down to the lowest wor)ers started to thin)
individually and collectively about the re1uirement of a 5Turn "round5. " strategy
was planed and implemented with the wholehearted support of the wor)force
during the period /AA/$/AA../t started to yield results and the 'ompany attained
the brea) even level by /AA..From /AA.$/AA2 onwards, the company started to
ma)e profits and wiped out the entire accumulated loss within a few years and
repaid the long term loans. Thereafter, it is the story of success and growth.

company. If any defect is identified, then the lot is considered as inferior 1uality. .
!ineral separation plant =!% unit0 and TiO, pigment plant =T7 unit0 is
two independent production units in !!#. The T7 unit is divided in to three
plants.
Illmenite -eneficiation 7lant

7igment
MINERAL SE3ERATION 3LANT
The !% plant was originally established in /A., in the private sector.
%everal machineries were added in the course of time. This plant situated by the
side of the open mines, does the separation of the minerals from the beach sand.
The raw sand is first concentrated in spiral separation to enrich the heavy mineral
content. The wet concentrate is then dried in fluidized bed drier and then fed to
the dry separation plant. !agnetic separation and *T separation separate different
minerals. The plant also separates >utile and Iircon from the sand.
TITANIUM DIOGIDE 3IGMENT 3LANT
TiO, 7igment manufacturing process of !!# based on chloride route, the
process consist of following steps.
>eduction and leaching of raw illmenite of A+$A,N TiO, =illmenite
-eneficiation0
>egeneration of spent *ydrochloride acid for minimum pollution.
'onversion of beneficiated illmenite to TiO, pigment
ILLMENITE )ENE2ICIATION 3LANT
*ere the raw illmenite containing 3H$;+N TiO, is beneficiated to A+N
TiO, content. The beneficiated illmenite is the raw material for the pigment
production plant. The ferric o(ide in the raw illmenite is subjected to high
temperate of H3++c. The reduced illmenite then coo)ed and sent to digesters
where it is leached with /H,+N *ydrocEoric acid. The spent leach li1uor is sent
to storage tan)s. The leached illmenite after washing and filtering is calcined to
get beneficiated illmenite.
ACID REGENERATION 3LANT
The spend leach li1uor from the pre concentrator is processed in to the
spray roaster in which the li1uid spray entering the furnace is heated by the
burning oil. The spend li1uor then decomposes to metallic o(ides and
hydrochloric acid. The hydrochloric acid vapour is first cooled in pre concentrator
and then absorbed in the wash li1uor generated in the I-7 to get /HN *'I which
is recycled bac) to I-7. The unobservable gases are scribbled with water before
venting to the atmosphere. The metal o(ide consisting of mainly iron o(ide are
slurred with water and routed to the slurry panel.
3IGMENT 3RODUCTION 3LANT
The pigment production plant has three unitsD

petroleum co)e at a temperature of H++$A++c in fluidized bed chlorination to
produce chlorides are condensed and purified to obtain pure Ti'l2li1uid, which 2s
stored in the storage vessel.
OGIDATION UNIT
In this unit raw pigment grade TiO, is produced by reacting pure Ti'l2
and o(ygen with at a temperature of about /+++c in a reactor after preheating the
Ti'l2 in a pure heater having suspended in code tubes to carry the Titanium
'hloride vapour. TiO, raw pigment obtained for this unit is scurried with water
pumped storage tan)s for further processing in the pigment$finishing unit, the
chlorine is liberated bac) to the chlorination unit.
O(ygen and chlorine are re1uired for o(idation and chlorination.
3IGMENT 2INISHING UNIT
The unit$dispersed slurry from o(idation unit is passed through the
different subsections of the unit via, sound milling and classification treatment
filtration, drying, micronisation, scrubbing, cooling and bagging. In the treatment
section chemicals are added. &ive a coating to the pigment is reduced to two
microns to be micronisation treatment. The hot micronised pigment is cooled and
pneumatically conveyed to the final storage bin, this product is then bagged in
