TROUBLE
The Lears Macaw is 27.530 in.
long and weighs around 2 pounds
The body, tail, and wings are dark
blue and the head is a slightly lighter
shade.It has a large blackish beak. It
has an patch of pale-yellow skin next
to the base of its beak, and orange-
yellow eyelids and dark grey feet.
Some threats include poachers and
smugglers capturing the macaws
to sell for money due to its rarity.
Collectors are willing to pay
thousands for even a single bird.

They are also endangered due
to the destruction of trees, hunt-
ing by locals with no restrictions or
regulations sometimes even for food.

SAVE IT
The Convention on International Trade
in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna
and Flora (CITES) puts out information
on indigo macaw and helps protect all
species threatened by illegal trade.
Currently, the Brazilian govern-
ment and some international con-
servation groups are trying to es-
tablish protected reserves for the
birds and to encourage breeding.
