The reestablishment of the
enclosure under Napoleon
who took over the majority
of the old layout (ramparts,
portals, railings, and ha-has)
means that today the Petit
Trianon estate is still a unified
area, private and preserved,
centred on the palace in
a wholly intimate setting.
This layout shows the refine-
ment and eclecticism of
Marie-Antoinette, emphasises
her way of living and freedom
of thought that was inspired by
Enlightenment theories.
Montres Breguet SA, Major Patron of the
Ministry for Culture and Communication,
has made it possible to undertake an
important programme of restoration on
the Petit Trianon and French Pavilion.

The estate of Versailles
You are about to visit the Palace and gardens of Versailles which count among the most prestigious of
the worlds heritage sites and represent the finest and most accomplished achievement of 17th century
French art. King Louis XIIIs former hunting lodge was transformed and enlarged by his son Louis XIV,
who installed his court and government there. The town that was built around the Palace bears witness
to this rich period of French History.
Enjoy the full magnificence and variety of the visits available by planning your day so as to discover all
the splendours of Versailles. Starting from the Royal courtyard, explore all of the Palaces visit circuits
freely then cross the gardens and groves to the Grand Trianon and Marie-Antoinettes Estate.
The restoration of Marie-Antoinettes Estate is part of the Grand Versailles
project that aims most notably to show Versailles contrasts: Classical and
Baroque, destitution and extravagance, male inspiration from Louis XIV
and female inspiration from Marie-Antoinette to Madame de Pompadour, to
name just a few. The Petit Trianon and its gardens are inseparably linked
from Marie-Antoinette: she was the only queen who imposed her personal
tastes on Versailles, scoffing at Court traditions. In the Trianon estate,
which Louis XVI gave to her in 1774, she found a haven of privacy that allo-
wed her to escape from the rigours of Court tiquette.
