dents and staff kicked off their 2014

Valentine Day Dance, which was led
by Ms. McMurtry. Students gathered
with their valentine to show their care
for one another. In the end it was a
great success, and a big thank you to
all who contributed. Someone has

NDHS Principal
Mr. Stanley W. McWilliams
On behalf of the entire staff, I
would like to thank Mrs.
Odom and the editorial and
committee staff of the Blue
Devil Times for producing this
second edition of the school
newspaper. I am very proud of
you and your efforts.

Staff and students finally our
winter days will soon be be-
hind us. As our weather transi-
tions to Spring, please keep in
mind that we have three
months of school left. There-
fore, we must remain focused.

Students you are on a journey
in which you celebrate many
successes and learn from mis-
takes you will make along the
way. However, what you take
from your journey largely lay
on your shoulders. As I stated
in the last edition, I am hon-
ored to serve and support you
in all of your endeavors. We
have come a long way; the
future looks very bright here
at North. Remember lets stay
focus.

Why do you call
me black?
By Mrs. Odom

Why do you call me black?
Is it my big lips,
My kinky hair?
Is it the curve of my hips,
Or my angry stare?

Why do you call me black?
Is it the way I speak,
My Ebonics and slang?
Is it my neighborhood,
That my culture has yet
Still to claim?
Jealousy
By Michael Mason

Jealousy takes the form of the red demon him-
self.
Sounds like a guy sucking in the air as he
watches someone steals the girl he loves.
Tastes like a cold rusty iron blade in your
mouth.
Smells like angry sweat.
Looks like a person stabbing you and pushing
you to the side.
Makes you feel depressed.

about making
art. Just get it
done. Let other
people decide if
its good or bad.
And while
theyre deciding,

Whatever your reason,
I have my own.

I call myself black.
Because of my power,
Because of my strength,
Both inner and outer.
Because of my ancestors,
Who fought with pride.
Because of their willingness
To die.
For me, for you.

I call myself black because
I am the epitome of envy
I am a Strong, Educated,
Black Woman!!

TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK?
By: Lakia Thomas
Question: What person comes to mind when you hear the word black history month?
Explain?

Answer: When I hear the words black history month, Dr. Martin Luther King comes mind. He fought for our rights to
be able to become whatever we want. He also fought so there would not be a difference between whites and blacks.

Yes, I'm preparing myself for college by studying for all tests and quizzes, listening to my teachers, and staying focused
so my teachers can teach me new concepts. -Xavier Mc Elwee Lloyd
Question: How much effort do you put in your education here at North? Explain?

Answer: I put a lot of hard work in my education here at North by coming to school everyday on time, doing all
of my work, and going home and doing my homework. -Reshard Cooper
Questions: Do you think North is preparing you for college? Explain?

Answer: Yes, I think that North Division is helping me prepare for college because most of the
