Comment on Is Philosophy Progressive? by Toni Vogel Carey
Science and philosophy have always been matter of discussion regarding terms of progression
and development. Toni Vogel Carey, in Is philosophy progressive, proposes that philosophy does not
focus on the same questions endlessly but rather changes according to the time period. This statement
is one of the many possible perspectives regarding the comparison between two well-known fields as
science and philosophy.
In the essay mentioned previously philosophy is said to be progressive which, in a way, shares
my position towards the subject. Philosophy is the study of everything that composes life, from
knowledge to interpersonal relationships, and focuses on the acquisition of wisdom. Society composes a
big part of what philosophy is, and due to the fact that society is currently being modified and new ideas
and expectations appear, philosophy can be said to be progressive. The adaption of philosophy toward
the change in society creates the rise of new questions and doubts about the functioning of what
surrounds us.
In reaction to what was mentioned in Is philosophy progressive?, by Vogel Carey, science is
undoubtedly progressive. As the essay stated science has been clarifying several unknowns we had
about the world, and because of this there has been an important development in terms of reasoning
and understanding among others.
Both philosophy and science are progressive fields that had help, and will certainly continue
doing, in the better understanding of the world and the development of human kind as an organized
and civilized society.
