Directors narrative

The narrative of the story is that Kendrick (Richard) goes around looking and
asking for help from people to help him progress in his music career but they all
Cut him off and turn him down but then out of his luck, he finds two people who
happen not only to have an interest in him and his music but also have their own
studio and help him progress also. The music video is non-linear and starts with
him in the studio recording, the beginning scene follows up from the second
verse scene where we see the beginning story of Kendrick trying to progress.
In the beginning, during the intro I used fade to show the change in scenery and a
link into the next scene. Another main technique I used was cut to rhythm, I
studied how long the original video scenes were and I applied the same
technique to my piece of work. Also at 2:45 I used the continuity technique
where I walked into the studio, I chose to do this to make the scene seamless and
smooth for the audience. Also, I have chosen to do my music video in a non-
linear format to make the music video more interesting and because this is a
similar approach to how the original music video is set too, in the original music
video, the story goes, that Kendrick starts off in the studio, which is similar to
mine, then it goes to him performing in the kitchen with his mum, which for my
idea, I decided to then show a shot of Dayo and Kendrick together which is
meant to represent a copy of the original idea but with my own twist, this is
because I wanted to show in my video that even people that you meet and work
with, can become more of a family member to you as a person then actual blood
related family. I have also used flashbacks also to help show that my music video
has a non-linear format and show I have chosen to use edits like a flashback after
Kendrick performs in the studio to show what he went through then I used other
edits like a zoom and pan to show the whole music video moving along and back
to the original/current time frame. Specifically, for the outro, I have chosen to
use a lot of edits and effects, this is to show a difference in the story and that, it
relates to the music video with the footage, however its a different section and is
not related. I have chosen to slow down the footage also because of the tempo of
the outro; I have also chosen to mainly to use a black and white effect for the
outro, this is to make it clear that both the scenes are together however, separate
from the actual music video as a whole and I chose to end the music video with a
static effect because of the sound used in the music outro sounds similar and
matches the static effect used. Whilst working with final cut, I have been able to
edit my music video to help fit my needs and being able to tell a story through
my edits and transitions. For example, I have been able to show continuity in my
music video through the choices I have made and using simple but effects
decisions.

The screen shot is the result of a range of different techniques and planning put
together; whilst I had placed the cameraman behind us recording us walking
inside the studio, we then moved him inside the studio to record us doing the
same action again and matching out pervious shot positions to the next. While
during editing this scene, it was easy to make it clear because all that was left for
me to do was fit it in at the right place and to trim the excess footage out and to
match the two different footages to look like one seamless edit.

Another techniques I was able to do while using Final Cut was to show a
difference in time. By this I firstly mean I was able to show two different scenes
happening at the same time. The screenshot shows two different scenes however
they compliment each other. This is because the first image of the guy holding
the phone in the studio relates to what is being said in the lyrics and also the
next image which can be seen is of the rapper in the same studio saying those
words and lip-syncing, however they are both different because of the actions in
which they do however through lyrics they are seen the same.

The second way in which I was able to show a difference in time was using
specific edits.

the screen shots show the
chronologic order of a
specific section in my music
video, the scene is of
Kendrick performing solo
and having fun, however I
cut in between the first set
of recording to the camera
then showing a clip of Dayo,
one of the producers in
the music video lip-
syncing the same words
however the scene comes
in through a Blur effect
then ends with a
flashback effect which
helps the audience
understand that maybe
Kendrick was inspired by
the producer in this
section of that there is
some relationship and
meaning behind the
words with these two
specifically however the main focus is that the audience understand that Dayos
footage was shot before Kendricks performance and that this then shows a
difference in time in the music video also.

Another link I have made to time difference is the outro. I have chosen specific
footages however I have chosen to use three main effects to make it clear that
the two different scenes link together however in comparison to the whole music
video, they are completely different to the whole story but interlink. The effects I
have chosen to use
are, Bad TV, 50s
TV and Bokeh
random. The
reason being so is
because I thought
that they worked
well together and
for an ending
scene. Also
because my music
video ends with a
static effect, I
thought that by
having the film in the 50s effect and the bad TV, they can both lead into that
effect and make it look like one whole edit, these effects are to also make it clear
that the scenes at the end are completely different from the main story however
are relevant to the music video because it is the outro of the song. I also used
these effects because I did not use them throughout my music video and I
thought that by having something different to the story would throw the
audience off completely however not to a point where they believe this section
was added in randomly and does not work with the rest of the music video and
instead of complementing it, it makes the whole edit seems unbalanced and
random.
