At the start of Charades and Pi:fiata
Our lesson is interactive and is set up in such a way that
would benefit Hispanic students and middle income white
students.

Students watch as the teacher demonstrates
what the students are expected to do for the
activity
Checking for Understanding: (15min)
Demonstrate how to answer the questions.
Question one being who is a famous dancer from the 21st
century who has movies and records out. Jenifer Lopez. If I
answer one more question right I get a swing at the pi:fiata. If
I answer 6 questions right then my group would break open
the pi:fiata.

Students get into groups (should be sitting
with already)
Discuss answers to questions in groups and
try and get enough swings to open the
pi:fiata.
Students swing at pi:fiata to open it and get
candy

Pifi.ata
Students get back into groups of 3 or 4.
They have to answer one question right to get a swing
It takes three swings to break open the pifi.ata
Allow group that got enough points to open the pifiata to
actually swing at the pifi.ata and open it.
Allow students to get candy
Have a stash ready for students who didn't get candy

Guided Practice: (5min)
Case Study (see handout "Case Study")
Have students get into groups of 3 or 4
Present students with information about a community
Ask students to think of ways to fix this problem

Students get into groups of 3 or 4 (stay at
desks with family group) and figure out the
problem and a solution. They can move
around the room and look up on the internet
resources if they would like to.
Independent Practice: (5min)
Go home and ask someone who is older than you by at least a
year what country their family is from and how that impacts
them.
When you come back write a paper, create a song, or create a
project that tells where the person is from and at least two
things that have impacted them the most while living in the
USA from their culture.
The project must be done before you come to class.

Students go home and work with a friend or
family member to figure out the answer
