Wall, support, ceiling, and roof make up the
skeleton of nearly every building. This fourth
volume in the series SCALE, Support and
Materialize, takes an in-depth look at these
load-bearing structures, covering the devel-
opment and realization of appropriate con-
structions from idea and design intention
all the way to constructional implementation.
Following the traditional building methods
of massive, cross-wall, and skeleton con-
struction, it points the way toward a material-
appropriate constructional approach to
these defning structural elements wall,
support, ceiling, and roof. Special attention
is given to how constructional and tech-
nical considerations can be harmonized with
spatial and formal commitments. The load-
bearing elements are organized, described,
and explored in detail from a material as
well as a formal and constructional perspec-
tive. Their practical implementation is illus-
trated by a series of international examples.

From idea to product
In the construction sector, demand is steadi-
ly increasing for innovative products. Product
Development and Architecture presents se-
lected examples that illustrate how the plan-
ning disciplines can contribute to such inno-
vations in building. Introductory essays
comprehensively explain the thematic and
methodological framework. Case studies ex-
emplify the transformation of ideas into pro-
totypes or products.
Creating dynamics, shifting boundaries,
building and expanding networks, conserving
resources, developing and optimizing plan-
ning tools, as well as implementing use-addi-
tive processes all these processes are
discussed in order to clarify the necessary
collaboration between various actors in the
construction industry. Groundbreaking solu-
tions clearly explain the role applied sciences
play in the active collaboration between uni-
versity and industry, as well as the interdisci-
plinary integration of disciplines and experts.
This publication presents interdisciplinary
collaborative projects such as the Seaweed
Facade, which resulted in the realization of a
building with a bioreactor facade at the Inter-
national Building Exhibition in Hamburg in
2012, or the "Printed Envelope, the result of

Le Corbusiers church architecture
Sets Le Corbusiers religious architecture
in relationship to recent exemplary church
buildings
Makes detailed use of the latest research
Le Corbusier not only designed and built
churches; he was also intensely interested in
religion and faith. His work deeply infuenced
church architecture in the twentieth century.
This book examines Le Corbusiers relation-
ship with religion in two introductory chap-
ters, presents his four designs for La Sainte-
Baume, the Chapel of Notre Dame du Haut de
Ronchamp, the Cloister of La Tourette, and
the Church of St. Pierre, and, in the fnal
chapter, examines his infuence on church
architecture in Europe in the twentieth cen-
tury. Examples include the Jubilee Church
near Rome by Richard Meier, the Chapel of
Saint Ignatius in Seattle by Steven Holl, the
Santa Maria Church in Porto by lvaro Siza,
Tadao Andos Meditation Space in Paris, as
well as the Kapelle der Vershnung (Church of
Reconciliation) in Berlin by Reitermann &
Sassenroth.
Flora Samuel holds a PhD in architecture and
teaches design and architecture history at
the University of Bath, UK, and is the author
of numerous publications. Inge Linder-Gal-
liard also holds a PhD in architecture and has
researched and written about Le Corbusiers
work in numerous essays.

Luxury edition
Sketches by the architect give insight
into the design process
Large scale, informative photographs

Helmut Jahn is world-famous for buildings
like Frankfurter Messeturm (1985-1991),
Sony Center with the Bahntower, Berlin
(1993-2000), airport Bangkok-Suvarnabhumi
(1995-2005) and the Veer Towers, Las Vegas
(2006-2010). In a luxury edition this book
shows in large scale and high-quality photos
by the well-known photographer Rainer
Viertlbck the increasing international reach
of Helmut Jahns oeuvre, starting in Chicago
and the United States in the 1980s and ex-
panding initially to South Africa, then to Eu-
rope, with the focus on Germany, and from
there via the Middle East to China, Singapore,
Japan and Korea.
The photos are combined with a comprehen-
sive collection of Helmut Jahns impressive
design sketches. They provide inspiring in-
sights into the development of the buildings
and the underlying design process. The
drawings present the buildings in their over-
all context of urban surroundings, the struc-
tural features, the proportions and ideas on
the materials, not to forget just as clearly
outlines of the engineering required for the
facade technology and construction work.
An essay by architecture historian Franz
Schultz explains the meaning of Jahns oeu-
vre within the contemporary architecture. An
text by Helmut Jahn himself comments the
philosophy behind his buildings.

Authors of international renown
Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg Archi-
tects, founded in 1987 in Toronto, is one of
most innovative architectural offces in
North America today. They have made a
name for themselves both for their integrat-
ed design process embodying collaboration
with experts, clients and future users as well
as the diversity of their aesthetically refned
and fnely detailed designs. The work ranges
from cultural institutions such as the Toronto
International Film Festival and Orchestra
Hall in Minneapolis to ecologically innovative
concepts such as Manitoba Hydro Place in
Winnipeg, developed with leading climate en-
gineers Transsolar of Stuttgart. A respectful
approach toward the integration of heritage
buildings is also a characteristic feature, il-
lustrated by the designs for the Royal Con-
servatory and the Gardiner Museum in Toron-
to. Finally, educational and research facilities
are also a strong focus in KPMBs work exem-
plifed by the Centre for Innovation and Gov-

Visions for the contemporary city
Pelli Clarke Pelli, founded in 1977 by Cesar
Pelli, is an architectural offce of worldwide
renown. They are known in particular for their
elegant and technically advanced tower de-
signs. These are usually characterized by
taut, seamless envelopes without exposed
profles their visual structure is achieved by
subtly staggered forms or variations in the
color or materiality of the faade glazing. The
unusual offce structure of Pelli Clarke Pelli
informs the work: an almost craft-like per-
ception of architectural design and a close
personal relation with the client are typical
for their approach. A model-making work-
shop within the offce helps to fnd the ap-
propriate form. Many projects also fulfl ur-
banistic roles: They create urban spaces or
act as iconic landmarks within the city fabric.
The publication encompasses a selection of
works from the past eight years. Amongst the
documented projects are Bloomberg Tower in
New York, Minneapolis Central Library,
Transbay Transit Center in San Francisco,
National Museum of Art in Osaka, Xiao Bai Lo
Tower in Tianjin and Torre Cajasol in Sevilla.

Fundamentals, methods, and applications of
parametric design for architects
Parametric design is a form of computer-
aided design, in which geometrical elements,
such as architectural components, are de-
fned and interconnected by variable at-
tributes known as parameters. It counts as
one of the most advanced methods in
schools of architecture, and is quickly be-
coming a standard in day-to-day architectur-
al practice. Long the domain of mechanical
engineering and automotive design, then ex-
plored by international avant-garde architec-
ture, parametric models can now be used as
innovative tools for creative and effcient de-
sign work.
This book explains parametric design, shows
how it works, and focuses on its functional
advantages and practical applications. The
author, Carlos R. Barrios, is an architect with
a background in computer science and fne
arts. He has accompanied the development
of parametric design at MIT in Cambridge and
in cooperation with large practices such as
SOM, KPF, and Foster + Partners, and has
conveyed the principles and applications for
many years in teaching. Systematically
structured, illustrated with international
built examples and instructive drawings by
the author, this book provides a thorough
point of reference on a complex subject.

Fascinating and inspirational image

Line: A fascinating element of design
The editor Ivana Wingham is an architect and
a member of the Architectural Association in
London. She is Senior Lecturer and Subject
Leader of Master in Architectural Studies at
the University of Brighton, UK.
Line is the constitutive moment of every
drawing and forms the core element of any
design for architecture, art, urban design,
or design in general. It cannot be reduced to
a purely linear system, but rather takes on
complex and dynamic forms that attract the
viewer in various ways, both consciously and
suggestively. Whether analogue or digital,
line is mobile because it unfolds on the sur-
face: as a straight, snaking, zigzagging, bent,
interrupted, or even invisible force.
The book is a page for page celebration of the
manifold aspects of line, using fascinating
examples from architecture, design, and art,
as well as interviews with designers and es-
says by various authors.

Dictionary of architectural experience
the vocabulary of space
Architecture is an experience with the in-
tellect and with all our senses, in motion, and
in use. But in order to actually discuss and
assess it with relevance, a clarifcation of
terms is essential in order to avoid the vague-
ness that often prevails when talking about
architecture.
This dictionary provides a vocabulary that al-
lows the architecture discourse to go beyond
the declaration of constructive relationships
or the description of architectonic forms in
familiar terms like roof, base, wall, and
axis or proportion. The point is to describe
the experience of architecture: how exactly
does it contribute to the experience of a situ-
ation? For instance, the staging of an en-
trance situation, or the layout and visitor
routes through a museum.
From context, through guidance, reada-
bility, patina, spatial structure, symme-
try and tectonics, to width (and narrow-
ness) or window, the most important terms
in architectural language are explained pre-
cisely and in detail.

MANUscript is a reference book sui generis: a
combination of inspiration, guide, and note-

sign (ceilings, foors, walls, doors, stairs) and
the relevant materials used (rugs, wall paint,
glass, wood products, stone, concrete). It
also focuses on means of recording and com-
municating designs: methods of representa-

hands-on suggestions. This updated and ex-
panded second edition addresses new and
important topics in day-to-day design prac-

From idea to materiality:
The basics of architectural design
The fundamental idea is the starting point of
every design. The idea is formulated into the
concept; the concept is expressed in the for-
mal language; the form requires a particular
material; the space is given shape. Architec-
ture is created.
Described in this manner, the design process
seems simple and straightforward. But for
students of architecture, it is in most cases a
diffcult learning process. But designing can
be learned!
What are the conceptual possibilities for
fnding the frst step towards a design idea?
What methods can be used to develop the
idea and to arrive at an architectural con-
cept? Furthermore, architecture is frst and
foremost the designing of (indoor) spaces.
But how are rooms structured, rather than
merely decorated? What role does the use of
materials and materiality play?
This compilation of the volumes Design Ide-
as, Design Methods, Materials and Spa-
tial Design in the successful student series
Basics now gathers the fundamental topics
of architectural design together in one book
and thus in one context answers crucial
questions concerning the hows and whys of
the design process.

lution, this second volume addresses the
rapid development of material research and
presents materials new to the market since
2010.
The signifcance of sustainable and intelli-
gent materials in design and architecture has
increased enormously over the last two
years. Numerous new products have been in-
troduced to the market and designers thirst
for knowledge about the sustainability of
new material is as strong as ever, making a
sequel to Material Revolution necessary. The
new volume contains a similar system of
classifcation but covers a completely differ-
ent range of materials. There is a chapter
dedicated solely to the criteria and factors of
sustainable product design, as well as to in-

architecture, and urban design for those
working professionally in the built environ-
ment. In this comprehensive work, an inter-
national and interdisciplinary team of au-
thors presents the essential aspects of the
various felds of contemporary interior archi-
tecture and design. The project examples are
illustrated with brilliant photographs and
plans. They have been selected according to
consistent criteria for all chapters of the
book and represent the essential building
types, including exhibition stand design, as
well as a broad range of todays design ap-
proaches.
The authors place the collaboration between
the various design disciplines at the center of
focus. The appendix contains information for
further research. All in all, Designing Interior
Architecture is a fundamental reference
work for all those professionally engaged
with the design.

Urban Design: The Arrangement of Structures,
Systems, Components, and Spaces
Urban design is based on planning and de-
sign principles that need to meet functional
demands on the one hand, but on the other
hand bring the design elements together into
a distinctive whole. Although designs are al-
most always dominated by the spirit of the
times, the basic compositional principles are,
for the most part, timeless. Designing Cities
examines the most important design and
presentation principles of urban design, us-
ing selected historical examples and con-
temporary international competition entries
designed by practices including Foster +
Partners, KCAP Architects & Planners,
MVRDV, and OMA. At the core of the publica-
tion is the question of how the projects were
designed and what methods and tools were
available to the designer. In addition to the
classic design that evolves in the mind of the
designer, the repertoire is now expanding by
means of new, computer-based methods,
such as parametric design, in which variable
parameters automatically infuence the de-
sign and provide a range of possible
solutions.
Three Best Practice examples, the Hafen-
City Hamburg, Belval-Ouest in Luxembourg,
and in the southern part of the city of Tbin-
gen illustrate in the fnal chapter how award-
winning urban planning concepts and de-
signs can be realized successfully.

The Infrastructure Research Initiative at SWA (Ed.)
Landscape Infrastructure
Case Studies by SWA
second and revised edition
Infrastructure, as we know it, no longer be-
longs in the exclusive realm of engineers and
transportation planners. In the context of
rapidly changing cities and towns, infrastruc-
ture is experiencing a paradigm shift where
multiple-use programming and the integra-
tion of latent ecologies is a primary consider-
ation. Defning contemporary infrastructure
requires a multi-disciplinary team of land-
scape architects, engineers, architects and
planners to fully realize the benefts to our
cultural and natural systems. This book ex-
amines the potential of landscape as infra-
structure via essays by notable authors and
supporting case studies by SWA landscape
architects and urban designers, among them
the technologically innovative roof domes for
Renzo Pianos California Academy of Science
in San Francisco, the restoration of the Buf-
falo Bayou in Houston, and several master
plans for ecological corridors in China and
Korea. Other projects develop smart re-use
concepts for railroad tracks that no longer
serve their original purpose, such as Kyung-
Chun railway in Seoul or Katy Trail in Dallas.
All case studies are described extensively
with technical diagrams and plans for reposi-
tioning infrastructure as a viable medium for
addressing issues of ecology, transit, urban-
ism, performance, and habitat.

AachenMnchener Direktionsgebude
in Aachen
Architekten: kadawittfeldarchitektur, Aachen

A necessary evil or a fascinating design task?
Designing circulation areas is about making
building components and spaces accessible
in the horizontal and vertical direction while
taking into account a wide variety of
requirements.
When architects make it into the pivotal ele-
ment of their concepts, they often create
compelling yet surprising room constella-
tions: Spectacular lifts and escalators, unu-
sual foor plan arrangements or stairway
sculptures that defne the space provide
staging for the required pathways. Circula-
tion areas take on the characteristics of an
amenity and become an exciting spatial ex-
perience as well as a crucial criterion of a
successful design. The separation between
circulation areas and space dissolves, be-
cause circulation areas become a space of
sojourn and communication.
Alongside extensive project documentations
that provide a great deal of inspiration and
stimulate new ideas, theoretical contribu-
tions of renowned specialist authors illumi-
nate the topic in regard to planning basics,
route guidance, steering of visitor fows, ori-
entation in space, accessibility for the disa-
bled and the important task of light planning.

Interdisciplinary work at the gateway to design
Overview of relevant standards from
graphical requirements to accessibility
Design of orientation systems and
orientation aids
Guidelines, decision criteria, workflows
All too often, orientation systems are
equated with signs and, more often than
not, only dealt with after the main design and
planning work has already been completed.
Frequently, the architectural requirements
are the only thing remaining for the informa-
tion architect to work with. However, an inter-
disciplinary planning and design process
would make more sense. What does the ar-
chitect have to consider? Or the graphic de-
signer? How can the hierarchy of traffc fows
and thus the systematic routing throughout a
building be taken into account at an early
stage, and what impact does this have on the
design?
By studying the publications comprehensive
fundamentals and illustrative practical ex-
amples, the designer will become familiar
with the complexities of guidance system de-
sign. Using successful projects completed
over the past few years, this volume presents
a wide selection of different implementation
possibilities ranging from the smallest con-
struction project up to complex structures.

Pedestrian Bridges
Ramps, walkways, structures
Fundamental knowledge ranging from
design to structural support systems,
from spatial installations to hanging rope
constructions
Materials for the various design principles
provide inspiration and guidance when you
put them into practice
Successful project examples in urban
and natural environments
Pedestrian bridges need to be above all func-
tional, but beyond this they should also re-
late to that which makes a location special,
to its pathways, topography and context.
Through their presence in the public realm,
they offer the opportunity of not only con-
necting areas separated from each other, but
also of giving a place its own identity. To draft
a good pedestrian bridge, a great deal of de-
sign sensitivity is required, particularly when
the bridge is being built in an inner-city area
or in a sensitive landscape.
The book at hand provides an overview of
current tendencies in pedestrian bridge con-
struction, of fundamental structural and
functional requirements, of the various load-
bearing systems, of application areas of the
various materials and of important economic
aspects. Successful real-life examples round
out the volume and are meant to provide mo-
tivation to make fascinating designs a reality
in interdisciplinary collaboration.

A Discourse on the Future of Construction
Almost no other discipline defnes the world
of tomorrow more than architecture. Thats
why architects and professional planners,
builders and companies are already defning
future building parameters today to meet
the developments and challenges of
tomorrow.
This publication brings together different
voices about the future of construction,
which, from the perspective of experts and
researchers, largely determines discourse on
the subject. Economic, political and demo-
graphic developments are also taken into
consideration, while issues concerning ener-

Living and working with an equalised energy balance
Net zero energy buildings, equilibrium build-
ings, or carbon neutral cities: in the discus-
sion on the right energy policy for the future,
our built environment is a central focus. Al-
though already tried and tested, the meas-
ures that can reduce the energy consumption
and emissions that result from the construc-
tion and maintenance of buildings, and above
all from operating them, are still far too rarely
employed.
Although, at frst glance, the procedure for
drawing up an energy balance may seem
simple, the details are complex and there are
many unanswered questions.
This publication discusses 23 selected
projects ranging across different functional
typologies and sizes to illustrate implemen-
tation at different scales and in different cli-
mates. The building-related documentation
of architecture and energy concepts is aug-
mented by the various lessons learned along
the path towards climate neutral living and
working. Comparisons of the different ways
in which the goal is achieved reveal strate-
gies that promise real success: zero energy

Anchoring sustainability in the design and
planning process
Specially developed system for direct
comparisons and easy evaluation of
buildings
Sustainability in a dialogue between a
home and its residents
Holistic Housing. Concepts, Design Strategies
and Processes is a fundamental reference
work on housing construction. The book
deals with the issue of sustainability in a
planning context but also analyses a build-
ing's usage and ageing over its 'life cycle'. A
system of criteria specially developed in an
accompanying research project can be used
to compare and evaluate buildings. It can
also be used as a tool for optimising the sus-
tainability of buildings in development during
the planning process. By contrast, most ex-
isting sustainability systems are conceived
not as design and planning tools, but as in-
struments for evaluating fnished buildings
and completed planning.
15 practical examples explain the ways in
which these criteria and other aspects of
sustainable building can be implemented in
sophisticated architecture and how these
can then be experienced. A system devel-
oped from analysing the examples is used to
classify and compare the buildings. The
building's signifcance as a lived environment
is also not neglected here: sustainability de-
velops in a dialogue between a building and
its users, with an emphasis on residential
usage.

change and resource depletion, and how they
are connected to our man-made environ-
ment: how energy effciency and sustainabil-
ity are linked, and what the life cycle concept
of construction materials is about.
Sophie and Henry, the young heroes of the
story, lead a brave journey through time
across the earth. Simple experiments awak-
en scientifc curiosity and an enthusiasm the
whole family can share regarding the latest
developments in architecture and construc-
tion, modern methods of energy conservation
and renewable energy.

Presentation of the construction process

adjacent disciplines, led to the development
of an integral planning approach that allows
the offce to react to the wide range of re-
quirements of worldwide projects.
The many spectacular constructions of re-
cent years speak for themselves: The limits
of feasibility seem to no longer apply, mathe-
matical laws are assigned a new dynamism,
and common structures are newly
interpreted.
For the engineers of Bollinger + Grohmann, it
is of central importance to understand de-
sign and construction in the planning proc-
ess as a unit. That is why they see their task
as further development and reinforcement of
the respective design: in dialogue with the
architects and other technical planners
and not least through their knowledge of how
to design load-bearing structures. In order
for innovative structures to be created, their
genesis cannot be based just on structural
and mechanical principles, but is instead the
product of experience with materials, con-
struction methods and technologies. This ex-
amination of interdisciplinary topics, as well
as an open and interested consideration of

whose synergies are pursued in an exempla-
ry fashion. The remarkable building projects
reveal what continues to drive and inspire the
engineers at ARUP to this day: a passion for
pioneering work
The idea of Total Architecture, as described
by Ove Arup in his vision of design, continues
to serve as the maxim for the globally operat-
ing engineering frm ARUP and its Building
Engineering Department. Drawing on select-
ed projects from recent years, this second
volume in the new DETAIL engineering series
shows how future-oriented and sustainable
civil engineering can be combined with this
ideal of a holistic design process always
with the aim of achieving perfect unity of
strength and elegance in every structure.
The focus is placed on the different process-
es that have accompanied the presented
construction projects. Connections are
shown between the individual buildings

role do faades, building technology, interior
design and furniture play? How will we work
in the future? Will fxed workplaces become
obsolete or quite the opposite? What effect
do modern methods and means of communi-

modern service society. Due to the rapid
pace of development in communication tech-

merging into each other more and more, and
work and the workplace are attaining an en-

A comprehensive survey of the portrayal
of the Prophet Muhammad in Europe
First chronological overview of the
historical trajectory of the depiction of
the Prophet Muhammad
Contribution to a better understanding
of the tensions surrounding contemporary
images of Muhammad
Reflection of the whole history of the
making of the image of Islam in the
Latin West
The volume represents a signifcant contri-
bution to the complex history of the concep-
tualization and pictorialization of the Prophet
Muhammad in the West. It gives a rapid and
though deep overview of the history of the
making of an Image of the Prophet Muham-
mad in Europe and thus refects the whole
history of the making of the image of Islam in
the Latin West, from the early medieval times
till the 19th century.
