Standard Three

The ELCC standards are thorough and comprised of the key elements for a
leader"s success. The standard that promotes a safe and caring environment is
standard three. Within this standard all leaders must be able to organize and utilize
resources to ensure the safety and learning of all students. This should be something
that is on every school leader"s mind daily. Students can not learn if they are not feeling
safe within their learning environment.
As an instructional leader, being able to organize and understand resources such
as public school law is important. That is just what I have been able to do through the
creation and research for the child abuse and reporting pamphlet. This is a leaet that
could potentially be used within a school district. All of the pertinent laws that are to be
followed are documented. This is a model of my understanding of interpreting and
utilizing the law as it pertains to student safety. As a future leader, it is something that I
must be able to do.
Along with the pamphlet, there is a revision of a school handbook based on the
law. All school leaders must stay up to date on the handbook and make changes as
needed. The safety of the students is dependent on it. My ability to review a school
handbook, identify the corresponding law, and make changes demonstrates my
leadership under standard three.
Being able to use the resources available to you is something that all leaders
should be able to do to make sure students are safe. A safe learning environment leads
to safe students who have the opportunity to learn and succeed.
