October 25, 2011 Hydraulic Structures WR401 Homework 1: Design of Syphon
Design an inverted syphon for the crossing of a canal with a drain of the following data: a. CANAL Full supply flow rate = 14 cumec Bed width = 6 m Full supply depth = 1.8 m Side slopes = 1.5H: 1V Full supply level = 201.8 m
b. DRAIN High flood level = 203 m Bed width = 29 m Full supply depth = 2.0 m Side slopes = 2H: 1V Earth bank level = 104 m
Design contraction transition length equal to expansion transition and all concrete. Use K 1 = 0.2 and K 2 = 0.3. It is necessary to provide 15 m wide roads on both sides of drain measured from the inside angle of the drain. Use the same pucca floor at u.s. and d.s. for simplicity. Design the following: 1. Use one barrel of 2.4 m 2.4 m checking the requirements. 2. Head loss and bed levels at different sections. 3. Uplift pressures on barrel floor and pucca floor. 4. Floor thickness for two equal changes. 5. Structural design of the syphon barrel.
Use water cover above barrel height= 0.4 m for u.s. and d.s. barrel ends.
