    Sodium carboxymethylcellulose is an anionic water-soluble polymer derived from cellulose. It is produced by reacting alkali cellulose with sodium monochloroacetate under controlled conditions. It dissolves rapidly in cold or hot water and forms films resistant to oils and organic solvents. Sodium carboxymethylcellulose has many uses including in cosmetics, foods, pharmaceuticals, adhesives, coatings, detergents, lithography, textiles, and tobacco. In pharmaceutical applications it can act as a stabilizer, thickener, gelling agent, protective colloid, film-former, suspending aid, and high strength binder.
